Appleby Strengthens Global Vision with New Leading Partner Appointments

Monday 22nd March 2010

Appleby, the world’s largest provider of offshore legal, fiduciary and administration services, has announced that five new partners have joined the group – all from leading offshore law firms - in the funds and investment services and banking and asset finance practices in the corporate and commercial practice group.

In Jersey, Appleby will be strengthening its Corporate and Commercial Group with the appointment of James Gaudin, who joins in August. James was previously a partner and head of Walker’s Corporate Department in Jersey and advises on corporate and commercial issues, with an emphasis on finance, capital markets and funds.

The additional global appointments include two new Cayman Islands partners - Richard Addlestone in the Funds and Investment Services team and Julian Black in the Banking and Asset Finance team, both previously partners with Walkers in Cayman. Matthew Stocker joins the Hong Kong office as a member of the Banking and Asset Finance team. He was previously a partner at Maples and Calder in the Cayman Islands and Hong Kong. Matthew Feargrieve joins the Zurich office in May in the Funds and Investment Services team. He was previously a partner at Mourant in London.

In addition to the new partner appointments, partner Gray Smith, who joined Appleby in April 2009, has now moved back to the London office where he will lead the Funds and Investment Services team. Prior to joining Appleby, Gray was London managing partner at Ogier and previously a partner at Maples and Calder.

Commenting on these appointments, Managing Partner of the Jersey Office, Michael O’Connell said: “The strategic hire of these leading practitioners represents a significant addition to the group’s strong Corporate and Commercial practice group, further enhancing our offering in Jersey and Cayman.”

He adds, “One of our key strategic goals for 2010 is to continue our substantial investment in the right partners to underscore our market leading position and our ability to offer clients a range of jurisdictions and services unequalled by any other offshore firm.”

Appleby has been ranked as the world’s “No 1 Offshore Law Firm” by partner numbers in The Lawyer’s 2010 Offshore Survey and will have 82 partners and 211 lawyers globally.
