Highlands College Foundation Degree in Financial Services Top-up (3rd year) Approved

On Friday 12th February the University of Plymouth agreed to Highlands proposal for an on-Island locally delivered BA (Honours) in Financial Services degree to act as a “top-up” to the successful Foundation degree that Highlands has been running for the last two years in conjunction with the industry.  This was a historic event because while the College has had Honours degrees operating out of it, this is the first time that the University has franchised a programme to Highlands College. The University sent a scrutiny panel to ensure that the programme meets its standards and Phil Austin was the industry representative on it.

The BA will start in September 2010 and will last an academic year. The first students will be those who have successfully completed the Foundation degree.  It has been designed to give the students choice but also to ensure local and global industry relevance.  There will be taught modules on management and leadership and on compliance and risk, and an opportunity for students to study an area of their choice.  The students will also have to complete a workbase consultancy project and a dissertation. Four staff with PhDs will tutor on the degree.

What is exciting in the design is that there is a provision for mature entrants who have professional qualifications such as ACCA, ICSA and STEP to have their prior learning accredited and to have direct entry on to the BA.  This is potentially very important for the industry and gives graduate opportunities on Island for those who haven’t had the opportunity in the past.  The time for this route can be flexible and they will receive a University of Plymouth degree.

At present, 28 students are enrolled on the Degree programme across the 1st and 2nd years.
