The local legal profession itself is divided into 'advocates' and 'solicitors', however, the distinction between the two branches of the profession is not the same as the position existing in England as between barristers and solicitors. The work of Jersey solicitors is restricted to non-contentious matters and they enjoy limited rights to appear in Jersey Courts when compared to advocates who may appear in all Jersey Courts. However, solicitors and advocates work in partnership together and many advocates carry out exactly the same type of work as solicitors, rarely, if at all, appearing in Court.
As is common for other financial centres, Jersey legal firms also employ many lawyers who have qualified and/or gained professional experience in other jurisdictions, in particular, England and Wales, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland and Commonwealth countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. Many of these professionals choose to subsequently qualify as Jersey lawyers but this is not generally necessary for them to perform their duties.
