The draft EU AIFM Directive is without doubt one of the most talked about proposals ever to emerge from the EU Commission, provoking intense debate and generating a huge range of views and opinions.

The proposed legislation is likely to have an enormous impact on hedge funds, private equity funds, property funds and investment trusts as the European Union aims to create a comprehensive supervisory and regulatory framework for alternative investment funds within the EU.

The Jersey Finance Annual Funds Debate will explore the aims and objectives of the draft AIFM Directive and provide a forum for debate on the opportunities, challenges, alternatives and risks which this proposal may or may not bring to the market.

Charlie McCreevy, until recently, European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, responsible for the European Union’s policy on the functioning of the internal market of 480 million people across 27 Member States and co author of the draft EU Directive, will deliver a key note speech explaining the reasoning that led to the Directive and what role the industry has to play in the final outcome.

Brendan McMahon, Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers CI LLP, Jersey will examine some of the proposed enhancements to the original draft directive, which for the most part respond to the concerns of the Global alternative asset management industry, potentially avoiding a 'Fortress Europe' and continuing to allow European Institutional investors access to best of breed asset managers located outside Europe.
