Gifts are normally presented at the conclusion of a meeting or meal. They are made in public, so as not to be mistaken for bribery, and given on behalf of a company rather than the individual. They should be wrapped (usually in red, pink or gold paper) or in a box. They may be declined up to three times before finally being accepted with thanks, so as not to appear greedy. Gifts are not usually opened in public, unless the giver encourages this.
Gifts should be neither ostentatious nor ‘cheap.’ Alcoholic drinks or snacks; produce or craft from your home; pens, books and stamps are all appropriate gifts. The symbolic value is more important than the material. Invitations for an ‘inspection tour’ of your country or company are especially treasured.
