The Place

China is the world’s third largest territory. At 3.7 million square miles, it is about the same size as Canada, the USA or the EU, although less than 3% of the PRC is water. The most fertile area is the eastern third, watered by two great rivers that flow over 3000 miles from the mountains in the west (average height 13000 feet) to the sea on the 9000 mile-long east coast. The PRC shares a border with 15 other nations.

The PRC is divided into a hierarchy of administrative regions. At the highest level (provincial) are the 4 municipalities of Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing; the 2 Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao, which operate on a ‘one country, two systems’ basis; the 5 Autonomous Regions, each dominated by an ethnic minority; and 23 provinces (including Taiwan).
