By China, we mean ’The People’s Republic of China’ as opposed to ’The Republic of China.’
The People’s Republic of China (PRC)
was established on 1 October 1949 in Beijing by the Communist Party of China (CPC). Hong Kong and Macao were added to the PRC in 1997 and 1999 respectively. The PRC considers the island of Taiwan to be a province of China under the control of an illegitimate government. The PRC has represented China at the United Nations and as permanent member of the Security Council since 1971.
The Republic of China (ROC)
was established in Nanjing by the Nationalist Party of China (KMT) after the 1911 Revolution. Some claim that the ROC still exists in the Province of Taiwan, to which its government fled in 1949. The ROC was a founder member of the United Nations in 1945 but no longer has any representation there.
