Industry professionals explored the future direction of the funds industry and the role of the offshore market at the Annual Funds Debate hosted and organised by Jersey Finance in London.

One of the event highlights was an interactive panel session between the speakers and the audience, in which the advantages and issues when comparing onshore and offshore domiciles was debated.

16.35   David Smith, Economics Editor, The Sunday Times
               David Smith presented a review of the global economy and prospects going
               forward. Will the recovery be sustained? Will oil prices rise? Geo political
               instability and social unrest on the back of austerity measures, all combine to
               de rail the current momentum. What are the implications for markets, global
               trade and financial services?

               David Smith is an award winning British journalist and author. He has been
               Economics Editor of The Sunday Times since 1989, as well as the paper’s
               Assistant Editor and Policy Advisor, and a regular contributor to CBI’s

16.50   Neill Nuttall, Managing Director, Chief Investment Officer and Head
               of the Global Multi-Asset Group, JP Morgan

               Neill Nuttall discussed the outlook for global investors; which asset classes
               should perform and in terms of asset allocation, which sectors and markets
               offer the brightest prospects. Where do the risks and downsides lie and what
               strategies can be deployed to mitigate these risks? Where are institutional
               investors active and what are the prospects for growth in alternates?             

               Neill Nuttall, managing director, is Chief Investment Officer and head of the
               Global Multi-Asset Group ("GMAG") based in London, with particular
               responsibility for global tactical asset allocation, total return and convertible
               bond portfolios. Prior to joining the GMAG he worked for Jardine Fleming in
               Hong Kong and more recently as a qualitative portfolio manager in the

17.05    Simon Burgess, Head of EMEA Real Estate Fund Services, State
               Street Global Services

               Simon Burgess explained why State Street Global Services has made
               such a major investment in Jersey, and what plans the company have to
               grow their Jersey platform as part of their Group strategy. Why should
               Private Equity and Real Estate Investors, and Asset Managers choose Jersey?

               Simon Burgess is a chartered surveyor with 25 years experience in the
               property sector.  He leads the EMEA real estate business for State Street Global
               Services and specialises in the establishment and administration of complex

17.20  Brendan McMahon, Partner, Global Asset Management
              Private Equity Leader, PwC

              Given the agreement of AIFM, what are the implications for the Private
              Equity and Funds world? Brendan discussed how Jersey is responding to the
              new regulatory landscape in Europe and what opportunities have been
              created. Why should asset managers continue to choose Jersey?

              Brendan is an audit partner within the Channel Islands financial services  
              group. He located to Jersey in 1986 and has extensive experience in offshore
              financial services; his clients consist of mainly private equity groups. Prior to
              1986 he serviced a number of financial services clients based in Dublin.
