This session’s expert discussions focussed on the exciting advances we’re seeing in the banking sector; challenger banks, open banking, virtual/app based banks and other innovations, and the digital transformations expected in the sector.

Led by Jersey Finance’s Director, Middle East, Africa and India – Faizal Bhana, and featuring a panel discussion moderated by Ashar Nizam, founder and CEO of AION Digital and a line-up of banking experts from the Middle East, Africa, Asia, UK and US, who together provided expert analysis and insights on developments in banking in the recent past, ongoing advances, trends and what the future holds.

The discussions also highlighted the Middle East’s significant and innovate drive in banking, and the reasons for this, and extrapolated the lessons from these identified trends onto the rest of the world, whilst also reviewing conventional, ethical (including Sharia-compliant) and green banking.

Faizal Bhana › Director – Middle East, Africa and India, Jersey Finance

Faizal is a UK qualified lawyer and for many years has worked and advised, and is a trusted advisor to institutions, corporates and families across the Middle East, Africa and India. Faizal specialises in banking and finance and has advised corporates, family offices and families including on their international investment and holding structures.

Faizal is responsible for developing the strategy for Jersey Finance’s engagement in Africa, the Middle East and India. He is focussed on his key markets, regularly travelling to all these countries, liaising and working with key stakeholders, including public and private institutions, corporates and families, building long-term mutually beneficial relationships.

Ahmed Khaled Albalooshi

Ahmed Khaled Albalooshi Founder and CEO, Advantari

Ahmed is the Founder and CEO of Advantari. Advantari helps businesses achieve competitive advantage using digital technologies. Prior to that, Ahmed was the Group Head of Technology and Operations at Al Baraka Banking Group, a leading Islamic banking group with geographic presence in 15 countries. He is also chaired the Digital and Cybersecurity Committee of Bahrain Association of Banks. Moreover, he was a Board Member and Chairman of the Advisory Board of Bahrain FinTech Bay. Ahmed holds an MBA from Manchester Business School and holder of a bachelor degree in IT from the University of Canberra in Australia. Ahmed is also certified in information system auditing (CISA) and information security management (CISM) and governance of enterprise IT (CGEIT). His area of expertise focus on Digital Strategy development and execution, IT Strategy, IT Governance, IT Management, Digital Banking, and Fintech.

Aidan McAvinue

Aidan McAvinue Chief Executive Officer, BankClarity

Aidan enjoyed a successful 15 year career in Corporate & Investment Banking, culminating in his role originating the Family Office Banking division for a major international bank, subsequently leaving banking to advise and co-invest with a small group of family offices interested in the (then) emerging Fintech arena. Aidan subsequently established the international investment management and custody subsidiary of a £20bn AuM institution whilst maintaining his passion for advising scale family offices and angel investing in early stage tech businesses. Aidan is leading the rapid scale up of BankClarity, an award-winning technology firm with offices in Jersey and the UK which provides cutting-edge banking hub technology to global non-bank financial institutions and international corporates who have multiple banking partners.

Ashar Nazim

Ashar Nazim Group CEO, Aion Digital

Ashar is Group CEO of Aion Digital. Formerly, he was a senior partner at Ernst & Young and global head of Islamic banking practice. Ashar is engaged in the build-out of the fintech ecosystem in MENA, advising several Islamic banks on structuring and implementation of fintech solutions. Over past 20 years, he has helped in the operational buildout of more than 30 Islamic financial institutions and national level programs. Last year, Ashar won the MEA Finance Award for “Best Technology Leadership” in his role as Founder and CEO of Aion Digital.

David Rice

David Rice Chief Operating Officer, Global Banking & Commercial Banking USA, HSBC

David, 36, is an accomplished finance executive with a thirst for understanding how complex organizations work and the value of local context in decision making. Educated in the U.K, David has worked for HSBC Bank across four geographies and multiple businesses. In 2015, David became one of the youngest Managing Directors at HSBC, leading the execution of the Commercial Bank’ AML & Sanctions program globally. In 2018, David came back to New York City and is currently the Chief Operating Officer for US Wholesale Banking and Global Banking Americas. David spends most of his spare time with his wife, Catherine, daughter Olivia, son Jack and their dog, Nutella. He serves as President & Chairman of the Board for the HSBC Realty Credit Corporation (USA) and sits on various external boards including; Rutgers Business School and MIT. David is fanatical about sports, more watching than playing these days.

Olivier Crespin

Olivier Crespin Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Zand

Olivier Crespin is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zand. Since taking on this role in 2018 he has focused on leveraging hybrid digital banking strategies to establish Zand as the first fully digital bank in the region to combine both retail and corporate banking. Crespin brings over 20 years of extensive expertise and leadership roles in digital banking and FinTech across Latin America, the USA and Asia. He recognises the need for a customer-centric approach to humanise the banking industry. Prior to Zand, Crespin has been an award-winning leader at CIMB Bank, DBS and Citigroup. Across those roles he’s led flagship programs into new markets including India and Indonesia and spearheaded the implementation of innovative technologies.

Yetunde Bolanle Oni

Yetunde Bolanle Oni Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bank - Sierra Leone

Yetunde as the Chief Executive Officer is charged with the responsibility to develop and deliver an overall country strategy that integrates the business and functions, financial performance, people and talent, risk management, business conduct and governance.
