Allan Wood › Global Head of Business Development, Jersey Finance

Born in Liverpool, Allan has more than 25 years’ financial service experience in Jersey and the UK.

As Global Head of Business Development, Allan is responsible for overseeing the promotion of Jersey as a leading international finance centre across key strategic overseas markets including Africa, the Gulf region, Asia, the US and the UK.

Allan joined Jersey Finance in 2015 as Business Development Director, before being promoted to Regional Head – West, where he was responsible for overseeing the Africa, US and UK markets.

Prior to Jersey Finance, Allan spent five years with Barclays in Jersey, where he was Vice President and leader of the Jersey International business within Barclays Wealth & Investment Management division. Before this, he spent 20 years with Royal Bank of Scotland.

A keen runner in his spare time, Allan successfully completed the London Marathon in 2014 and 2016, while he is also Chairman of The Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation, a Director of Jersey 2 Africa 4 Football Foundation, and an advisor to the Cherie Blair Foundation’s 100,000 Women Campaign Board.

Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa › Business Development Consultant – Africa, Jersey Finance

Based in Johannesburg, Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa’s primary focus is developing the strategy for Jersey Finance’s engagement in the South African market. She also plays a vital role in supporting the organisation’s wider activity across the continent.

Dr Nyakatawa is a multifaceted business consultant with more than 20 years’ experience working in financial services, specifically wealth management in large financial services companies in South Africa and across Africa. She joined Jersey Finance in 2021 and is responsible for business development in Africa, currently with a primary focus on South Africa.

An international speaker and thought leader, Dr Nyakatawa has been interviewed on various platforms including the BBC, CNBC, ENCA and various publications. She champions women’s issues as an Advisory Board Member of Women in Tech (SA Chapter) and an International Campaign Advisor for the Cherie Blair Foundation’s 100,000 Women Campaign Board, among others. She was recently elected by members to the Board of Directors of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa(FPI), she is a Non-Executive Director at Masthead and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), CFA member and SAVCA member. She holds an MBA and PhD from the University of Cape Town.

Johan van Zyl

Johan van Zyl Partner & Chairman - South Africa, Stonehage Fleming

Johan is the Executive Chairman of Stonehage Fleming South Africa and a member of the Group’s Executive Committee. He is an adviser to several prominent South African families, serves as a director of a number of investment companies and trusts and acts as an independent trustee to various family trusts and public benefit organisations. Johan joined Stonehage Fleming in 2010 to start the Investment Management Division in South Africa and was appointed as CEO of Stonehage Fleming South Africa in 2013. Prior to joining the Group, Johan was an Investment Manager at Fleming Family & Partners in London. Johan holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Industrial Electronic) from the University of Stellenbosch and is a CFA Charter holder.

Philip Faure

Philip Faure Commercial Director, Paragon Impact

Philip is the co-founder of ReVive Impact Partners, with a focus on investing both financial and intellectual capital in African businesses with a for-profit and for -purpose mission. He is a co-founder and trustee on a several social enterprises and philanthropic trusts, developing innovative solutions in the areas of Early Childhood Development, Tertiary Education Funding, and Job Creation through enabling access to traditional bank finance for SME’s. His current focus is on building Paragon Impact, an impact measurement and grading technology, helping businesses better understand and measure their impact across the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Philip kas worked in the financial markets for 30 years, with time spent in stockbroking, investment management, wealth management, private banking and philanthropy. His particular interest lies in the intersection of finance, technology and impact.

Andrea Benkenstein

Andrea Benkenstein Associate Director, PwC

Andrea is an associate director and has been with PwC for 12 years. She started her career as an auditor. She works with leaders across a broad spectrum of organisations, including large to medium family-owned businesses. She has excellent facilitation skills and is engaged as a facilitator and trainer on various programmes including coaching at PwC and as well as at family business events across Africa. Her EQ and Value-based methodology enhances the process of self-awareness, management as well as accountability thereof in the workplace and in person. She assists families on a day-to-day basis with writing their owner strategy which translates into their family constitution. She is registered with COMENSA, FFI as well as the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). She publishes Africa family business and NextGen surveys for PwC and is the PwC NextGen lead for Africa.

Jo McDonnell

Jo McDonnell Impact Lead, Innovest Advisory

Jo is the Impact Lead at Innovest Advisory, an Impact Investing advisory firm based in South Africa and the Channel Islands. She works with Funds, Private Wealth and Enterprises to embed impact into their strategy and operations. Jo works across the investment lifecycle, from impact strategy, screening and due diligence, to impact measurement and management, analysis and impact reporting. Based in Johannesburg, Jo supports African fund managers and asset managers, or those investing into Africa, to better define, quantify and communicate the impact they bring about. Jo holds a degree from the University of Cambridge and spent her early career at PwC in London, advising corporates and Governments on sustainability and climate change. She now works at the interface of investments for sustainability, climate change and socio-economic development.

Dean Douglas

Dean Douglas Director, Private Wealth, IQ-EQ

Dean is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Dean qualified with Deloitte in 2003, having gained valuable experience whilst auditing a wide variety of offshore financial institutions and structures. Since joining IQ EQ Group twenty years ago, he has held various positions, whilst gaining significant exposure to private client structuring, both from an accounting as well as an administration perspective. Having grown up and spent his formative years in South Africa, Dean knows the country well. He is fluent in Afrikaans and has a strong understanding of the culture and diversity of the country and travels regularly to service existing clients and relationships.

Catherine de Maid

Catherine de Maid Partner, Burges Salmon

Catherine has a particular focus on advising clients with a South African connection, having worked in South Africa for 12 years where she specialised in the establishment of offshore structures for South African individuals and companies, and the establishment and running of private charitable foundations. Catherine works between the firm’s Bristol and London offices. She lives in the countryside just outside Bristol and enjoys walking her dogs and spending time with friends and family. Catherine is a Partner in the firm’s 40 lawyer strong Tax and Private Client Team. Catherine specialises in international tax, trusts and estate planning advice for a wide range of clients, from high net worth individuals to leading private banks and other financial institutions.

Mark Clubb

Mark Clubb Executive Chairman, TEAM

Born in Preston, Lancashire, England in 1960, Mark has a BA (Hons) degree in Economics and Business Studies, CISI level 6 in Private Client Investment Advice and Management and ICA Advanced Certificate in Compliance. Mark began his career in 1981 at the London-based internationally respected firm of stockbrokers, Hoare Govett. Starting as a company analyst, Mark went on to build a 27-year career in investment banking. During this time, he would go on to hold various senior management roles working for UBS Philips and Drew and BZW (latterly Credit Suisse First Boston). Following a management buyout of Altium in 2008, Mark returned to Jersey and secured a position at private client stockbrokers, Collins Stewart, later acquired by Canaccord Genuity Inc. This marked the beginning of a second career in investment management. He has built a 10-year track record of consistent market competitive portfolio returns investing in global equities.

Hugo van Zyl

Hugo van Zyl Cross Border Tax & Exchange Control Advisor, Taxforum

Hugo qualified as a South African Chartered Accountant in 1986 and more recently as a Chartered Tax Advisor. Hugo’s continued Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) status at STEP allows him global access to international colleagues and collaborators. Hugo is an experienced trainer, lecturer and "GO TO" industry specialist. It is no surprise that SARS appointed him to lecture on capital gains tax (CGT) and worldwide taxation based on residency. In the last ten years, he has presented at least once a quarter for any one of the several professional bodies he belongs to. Since 2020, Hugo has been a regular presenter to the Tax Faculty. Hugo is internationally known as @wegkaner (on Twitter), taking particular care of Saffas living outside South Africa, as he himself reside in Dubai for 6 months of the year.

Michael Giraud

Michael Giraud Head of Fiduciary Services, Jersey, Standard Bank

Michael is the Head of Fiduciary Services for Standard Bank Offshore Trust Company Jersey Limited and leads a team of highly qualified and experienced trust professionals looking after bespoke dynastic structures with a diversified asset base. He joined Standard Bank from an award-winning independent trust group where he was both a director and shareholder of the business. In his previous role headed a large team that was responsible for the establishment and ongoing management of large complex dynastic structures for families with a focus on Africa, the Middle East, the UK and North America. Prior to working at to his last role Michael worked in the trust and fiduciary division of a large Canadian banking institution, working in both their Jersey and Cayman offices. In this role he focussed on African, North American, European and UK connected families.

Nokuzola Cossie

Nokuzola Cossie Head, Fiduciary Advisory Services, Wealth and Investment, Standard Bank

Nokuzola Cossie is a trusts and estates lawyer whose career spans over a decade in corporate and private practice. Nokuzola advises high net worth families and individuals regarding the structuring of their estates, succession, trusts (domestic and offshore), business continuity and other ancillary fiduciary related matters. She has a keen interest in philanthropy and advises charitable organisations on their structuring, governance, and sustainability. She presently heads up the Fiduciary Advisory Team at Standard Bank Wealth and Investment and focuses on educating her clients about the importance of planning and continuous review of plans, as well as providing practical and solution driven advice. She holds a BA, LLB (Rhodes University), postgraduate diploma in law, specialising in tax law (UCT) and LLM (UCT). She is an Admitted Attorney and Notary of the High Court of South Africa.
