Led by Faizal Bhana, Director for Middle East, Africa and India at Jersey Finance, this event provided an opportunity to hear from some of East Africa’s leading professionals as they discussed some of the key topics, trends and considerations for African families and family businesses in 2021 and beyond.

Faizal Bhana › Director – Middle East, Africa and India, Jersey Finance

Faizal is a UK qualified lawyer and for many years has worked and advised, and is a trusted advisor to institutions, corporates and families across the Middle East, Africa and India. Faizal specialises in banking and finance and has advised corporates, family offices and families including on their international investment and holding structures.

Faizal is responsible for developing the strategy for Jersey Finance’s engagement in Africa, the Middle East and India. He is focussed on his key markets, regularly travelling to all these countries, liaising and working with key stakeholders, including public and private institutions, corporates and families, building long-term mutually beneficial relationships.

Kamal Shah

Kamal Shah Managing Partner, Grant Thornton

Kamal is the Managing Partner at Grant Thornton Kenya. He joined the firm in 1988 when the firm was known as Vipul Shah & Co. as a Tax Senior. He rose through the ranks and became Managing Partner of the firm in 1997. Kamal looks after overall management and operation of the firm and is responsible for Advisory services specific to family-run businesses. He is also involved in setting the policies and long term strategies for the organisation. Kamal acts as Grant Thornton’s East Africa hub leader bringing together firms in Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia as well as correspondent firms in Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and Somalia. He drives the growth of our business in this region through collaboration and value addition in shared resources. Kamal has a passion for people development and is at the forefront of creating the environment our people need to succeed. He is directly involved in bringing up new leaders within the firm through coaching and mentoring.

Haanee Khan

Haanee is a Partner in the Corporate & Commercial Department at CMS Daly & Inamdar Kenya. Haanee’s primary area of practice is Corporate & Commercial law and a niche focus in the Aviation industry. He has substantial experience in both Corporate M&A transactions and Aviation Finance & Regulatory work. In his capacity as a Corporate lawyer, he has been involved in a range of private equity matters, mergers and acquisitions cutting across a range of specialist sectors including healthcare, communications, aviation and banking.

Jonathan Sprigg

Jonathan Sprigg Head of Fiduciary Services, Standard Bank International

Jonathan Sprigg is Head of Standard Bank’s international corporate and fiduciary services business located in Jersey and Mauritius. Jonathan has worked in the industry for 24 years in Jersey, Isle of Man, London and Mauritius travelling extensively across Africa during his career assisting private families, corporates and institutions to establish structuring solutions.

Amaechi Nsofor

Amaechi heads up the firm's UK based Africa Business Group. He has over 15 years' experience providing both contentious and non contentious financial advisory services across the UK and Africa. As a Partner in Europe's largest team providing specialist asset recovery, insolvency, restructuring and special situations workout services to clients across multiple jurisdictions, Amaechi has a unique platform to deploy the right people to support clients in Africa. Amaechi has pioneered the use of insolvency powers to facilitate litigation, trace and recover misappropriated assets for the benefit of creditors. His team is routinely appointed by government and other regulatory agencies to investigate, identify and ultimately recover misappropriated assets. Amaechi is at the forefront of the drive to share best practice and develop insolvency and asset recovery techniques in Africa.

Michael Chomba

Michael is Director & Head - Project & Corporate Finance Advisory at Grant Thornton Consulting Limited, Kenya. In addition to his Advisory role, Michael acts as the firm wide Champion for the Markets Strategic Pillar anchored on Grant Thornton Global Strategy. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi & Certified Public Accountant (Kenya) professional qualifications. He is a member of the Institute of Certified Investments and Financial Analysts (ICIFA) Kenya. Michael has over sixteen years’ financial advisory experience, mostly undertaking capital raisings, mergers & acquisitions, and transaction advisory assignments in Middle East and Africa region. His skills set comprise deal origination, commercial analysis, transaction structuring, financial modelling, undertaking business valuations, drafting information memorandum, feasibility studies and business plan reviews mandates across various sectors such as energy, housing amongst others.
