As a tribute to the late Hannah Johnson, the Lions Club of Jersey’s Young Ambassador of the 21st Century 2009, local youth organisations will be the main beneficiaries of the 2012 Swimarathon.

Organisers the Lions Club of Jersey and event sponsor RBC Wealth Management launched next year's Swimarathon at La Motte Street Youth Centre, St Helier, where they revealed how the Island's youth clubs and associations will benefit from at least £45,000 of support.

They were joined by Hannah’s mother, Carole Johnson, and representatives of the Jersey Youth Service, as well as by staff and young people from Le Squez Youth Club who were among the beneficiaries of the 2011 Swimarathon.

The Head of Jersey Youth Service, Mark Capern, said he was thrilled that the young people of the Island stood to gain from next year's swim. 'Jersey's youth clubs and projects are always very active, with plenty going on and limitless ideas for the future. This funding means clubs can continue to broaden their activities and services to meet the needs of young people. Whether they apply for new resources for their clubs or for schemes that will help develop young people, the funds will be a fantastic bonus for all positive work done by the sector,' he said.

Lions Club President Mike Labey said: 'Hannah Johnson was an inspiration for all young people and we felt that it would be most appropriate for us to donate a Lions’ share of the receipts from the 2012 Swimarathon to Jersey’s youth organisations in her memory. We will be donating £45,000 or 40 per cent of the moneys raised, whichever is the greater, and we hope this will encourage our swimmers and supporters to achieve even more than last year’s magnificent total.’

This will be the sixth year that RBC Wealth Management has sponsored the event. Chris Blampied, Managing Director, Royal Bank of Canada (Channel Islands) Limited, also attended the launch. ‘The Swimarathon is a great community event and it is good to see that after 40 years it is still greeted with so much enthusiasm and affection. RBC Wealth Management is really proud of its involvement and we look forward to the continued success of our relationship with the Lions Club of Jersey and the 2012 Swimarathon,’ he said.

The 2012 Swimarathon will take place at Les Quennevais Leisure Centre from 7th to 11th March 2012. Information about entering a team is available from the Swimarathon Administrator, PO Box 397, St Helier, Jersey JE4 9ZX or via email
