Participating walkers and local charities gathered for a presentation event at The Royal Yacht Hotel last night to celebrate the whopping £115,041.90 raised following June’s Itex-Rotary Around the Island Walk.

During the celebratory presentation evening, which took place in the Royal Yacht’s Celestial Hall, benefitting charities were awarded their donations by Murray Norton, supported by Itex, and Rotary de la Manche.

This year, 1123 walkers participated in either the full 48.1-mile Walk or the first stage of the 2nd Lieutenant Governors Walk from Elizabeth Terminal to St Catherines. In addition to the distribution of charitable donations, several walkers were recognised for their efforts. John Willcox aged 74 (the oldest Walker), Freya Roberts and Elliott Stephens both aged 10 (the youngest Walkers) and Ceri Parmiter who received her award for raising £2,800 which was the most sponsor money raised by an individual Walker. Special award winners received a one-off commemorative pin-badge, designed by exclusive jewellers, Aurum.

Paul Marett, Itex-Rotary trustee, “We are absolutely delighted to have raised more than £100,000 for each of the last 10 years. That is a staggering amount of money that has benefited local charities and worthy causes right across Jersey. Because of the ongoing popularity of the Walk, we desperately urge other charities to come forward and tell us about projects they have planned or their specific and worthwhile needs which require financial support. Itex-Rotary Trust is here to help and we’d very much like to hear from you.”

Local charities being supported in 2011 are The Abbeyfield Jersey Society, Age Concern and Silkworth Lodge. In addition, another 14 local organisations will benefit from the donations raised by the Walkers and their numerous supporters. Most of these organisations participated themselves in the Walk.

Jason Wyse, CEO, Silkworth Charity Group, said, “It’s wonderful that the trustees of the Around The Island Walk have recognised the valuable work that goes on within the Silkworth Charity Group, by choosing us as one of the three main charities who will benefit from the Walk proceeds.  The donation will go towards helping so many people who suffer with drug and alcohol problems, together with their families and significant others.

“We are currently working on some great projects within the Charity Group, the main one being the development of the island’s only residential detoxification facility. This facility will complement the Primary and Secondary Care that we already provide, as well as our after care services which supports people in their transition back to normal living within society. This will enable us to provide the full cycle of treatment required for those who suffer with drug and/or alcohol addiction and thus helping us to assist the States of Jersey in achieving the strategic aims of tackling the wide spread problems caused by addiction in the island.

“The funds that we are grateful to receive from the proceeds of the 2011 Walk, will be put towards these crucial projects which will ultimately benefit so many people within our community.”

Across both Islands, to date the Itex Walk has raised over £2,111,511 for charitable causes.
