Around 90 primary school pupils are set to participate in the annual Deutsche Bank Primary School Hockey Festival this weekend, an increase of around 25% on last year.

Taking place at the pitches at Les Quennevais on Saturday 6th March between 9.30am and 12.30pm, the tournament forms part of the Jersey Hockey Development programme, which has been sponsored by Deutsche Bank since 2003.

The seven-a-side tournament, designed to give more primary school pupils the opportunity to play hockey, will feature ten teams from five island schools – Plat Douet, St George’s, Grouville, Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College Prep – and a junior side from Quackers Hockey Club. There will be two competitions, with one for the more experienced players, both played in a ‘round robin’ format.

John Carnegie, Coordinator of the Deutsche Bank Primary Schools Hockey Festival, said: “This Festival goes from strength to strength with more pupils, schools and teams taking part than in previous years. Whilst it is primarily a celebration of hockey, with an emphasis on enjoyment and participation, there is also definitely a competitive element and I expect there to be some fiercely fought matches on Saturday morning. The success of this event reflects the importance of Jersey Hockey Development initiatives and, with the ongoing support of Deutsche Bank, I hope we can continue to grow and involve even more schools in the future.”

Andreas Tautscher, Chief Country Officer for Deutsche Bank in the Channel Islands, added: “Supporting grass roots initiatives like this Festival and the wider Jersey Hockey Development programme are so important and I am delighted that Deutsche Bank continues to offer its support. Not only has this event introduced hundreds of young people to the sport over the years and given them the opportunity to develop essential life skills, it has also resulted in some progressing to a higher level, providing evidence of the opportunities initiatives like this can often open up.”
