Local recruitment agency, ASL, is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

The agency, established in 1974, has weathered hard times and enjoyed many good times to become one of Jersey’s longest established recruitment companies.
Kenneth Steventon, who established the company, and today continues as Chairman of ASL, moved to Jersey from Stoke on-Trent in 1968 along with his brother and sister and their families.  With business experience gained while running the family’s Stoke based pottery business, the entrepreneur wanted to identify a business opportunity that would contribute to Jersey’s economy.
In 1974 Mr Steventon identified a niche in the market for a high quality personnel agency offering services to a number of sectors including finance and law. From his own experience he recognised the importance of employing competent staff in order to build a successful business and felt he could help others to find the right people for their organisations.
Mr Steventon, commented:
‘I had been lucky enough to work with a strong team around me and therefore could see that people make organisations successful. As there were only a couple of personnel agencies in Jersey at the time, I felt we could offer clients and candidates alike a professional service that also provided value for money.
‘Establishing ASL and then watching it develop has been very enjoyable. Given the economic climate the market is currently a more difficult place than it was 12 months ago but I am confident that with our experienced team, ASL will be here at least another 35 years,’ added Mr. Steventon.
Recruitment agency celebrates 35 years/2
Although the recruitment landscape is changing, ASL has adapted well to this. The company can boast a number of clients who, through various mergers and acquisitions, have retained a relationship with the recruitment company from the early days in 1974.
These clients will have seen ASL grow from small offices in La Chasse to larger offices in Hill Street until last year when they moved to newly designed modern offices with up to date technology conveniently located next to the Post Office in Broad Street.
ASL Director, Tina Palmer, who has been with the company for nearly 20 years, concluded:
‘ASL has been offering companies and candidates in Jersey a high level of service for 35 years and because of these exemplary standards will continue to be successful. We have adapted with economic change and because of this have a great strength and depth of knowledge and experience. We are delighted to be celebrating such a significant milestone and are looking forward to the next 35 years.’
