Banjaard has won the 2014 Carey Olsen Inter-Island Yacht Race. Challenging conditions tested the determination and skills of the 81 participating yachts during the most competitive race in the Channel Islands’ calendar.  Banjaard won the prize for first overall, First Swan and First IRC Class while Alice crossed the finish line first, winning the prize for Line Honours and Third Overall.

Banjaard and Alice were joined in the top five by Abracadabra which came second overall, Blackjack which came fourth and Erica which came Fifth.

After a rainy and gusty start the fleet left Guernsey on time at 08:00. Most had a good sail and were looking on track to finish before the time limit, however, conditions were not favourable and the wind dropped as the head of the fleet approached Corbiere which is where the waiting began.

Many of the front runners slowed near Noirmont and were passed by. Alice finally crossed the finish line just after 1pm while the rest of the fleet were stationary at various points off the Jersey coast. Throughout the early afternoon boats continued to finish but by the time limit at 4pm only 19 boats had completed the course under sail.

Guernsey Yacht Club commodore Jason Hobbs said: “It was fantastic to see so many yachts sailing from Guernsey to Jersey and enjoying a competitive race despite challenging conditions. The Carey Olsen Inter-Island Yacht Race is a big event in the sailing calendar so winning is a great achievement which the crew of Banjaard can be very proud of.”

Carey Olsen managing partner Alex Ohlsson congratulated the winning crew and all who took part in this year’s race.

“This race is an important event for keen sailors across the Channel Islands and one that Carey Olsen is proud to support for the fifth year running. We would like to congratulate everyone who completed the course and especially those who took home trophies across the categories.”
