Funding for the Safer St Helier Community Partnership and its Q-Safe Taxi Marshal scheme will be boosted in 2011, thanks to the continued sponsorship and branding of four London-style taxis by Barclays Wealth. Advertising on London-style taxis in Jersey began to appear last year as a result of a partnership arrangement between Transport & Technical Services; Safer St Helier Community Partnership, taxi drivers and local businesses, with the aim of funding community initiatives such as the Q-Safe Taxi Marshal scheme. The aim of the Q-Safe scheme is to provide supervision for the late night taxi queues at the Weighbridge, in order to minimise queue jumping and associated disorder with a view to making residents and visitors feel safer. The scheme won the St Helier Social Responsibility Award in 2008 and has received recognition from the National Community Safety Network in the UK. The scheme has already reduced crime and disorder by 64 per cent in just two years and is of critical importance. Colin Russell chair of the Safer St Helier Community Partnership said, ‘I am delighted that Barclays Wealth will continue its commitment of funding towards the Q-Safe Taxi Marshal scheme and initiatives like it. The scheme runs on Friday and Saturday nights and without this vital financial contribution we could be forced to reduce the two nights of cover to just one. The scheme continues to be a success with praise from taxi drivers, users of the service, the States of Jersey Police and those that operate businesses in and around the Weighbridge area.’ The highly visible rank taxis collect and drop off at key locations in the island including the airport, harbour, Weighbridge, Library Place, Snow Hill and Beresford Street. Vehicles travel around the island for approximately 70 hours each week. Richard Corrigan, director of Barclays Wealth said that following the success of this year’s branding on the London-style taxis, the company is pleased to continue its support of this particular community initiative. ‘Support of community initiatives such as the Safer St Helier Partnership is very important to Barclays Wealth and it is our responsibility to continue to assist groups in the island which provide much needed and often under funded services,’ said Mr Corrigan. ‘Barclays Wealth is a dynamic, global company and we’re pleased to have the opportunity to continue our branding on taxis throughout 2011. We look forward to seeing the taxis out and about on Jersey roads for another year.’ – (ends) – Issued by Lisa Gutcher, One Strategic, tel: 01534 488899, email: email@example.com.
