The Barclays Wealth Community Team in Jersey has been awarded a prestigious Barclays Wealth Chairman’s Award in recognition of its continued hard work and commitment to the local community through volunteering and fundraising.
The team of local employees, Adele Langlois, Carol Bisson, Bobbie Roberts, Nicola Mollet and Sarah Swain received the award for ‘Team Achievement of the Year – UK’. At the same time, the Team announced that Barclays Wealth Jersey donated £104,863 to local charities and community groups during 2010.
These funds were given to local good causes and were a combination of monies raised by Barclays Wealth employees through fundraising and events, much of which was matched by Barclays Wealth through its employee charity matched funding initiative and also donations from the company to projects identified by the Community Team. Beneficiaries throughout 2010 included ten Barclays Wealth Community Award winners such as Mont A l’Abbe School as well as The Barclays Wealth Late Night Football League, Jersey Hospice Care and Headway to name a few.
The Barclays Wealth Chairman’s Awards recognise and celebrate the fantastic achievements of Barclays Wealth colleagues in their local communities through fundraising and volunteering. The Barclays Wealth Jersey Community Team was nominated for the work they do that benefits community groups and charities in the Island. The team covers a wide range of community activities from basic fundraising initiatives to running the Barclays Wealth Community Awards, which is considered to be one of the highlights in the community calendar in Jersey. The team work tirelessly to ensure that funds and staff time are distributed to those that need it and strive to support the causes that their colleagues feel most passionate about. Lasting relationships are built with the charities they support and the team monitors the progress of projects, which have been financed by Barclays Wealth.
‘I am delighted for our Community Team,’ said Richard Corrigan, director, Barclays Wealth. ‘They all work incredibly hard in order to ensure that we, Barclays Wealth, are playing a major role in the community. We are proud to call these individuals our colleagues and I applaud them for the excellent job they do on behalf of Barclays Wealth and on behalf of the charities and community groups which they work so tirelessly to assist.’
It’s important to Barclays, as a group that colleagues are able to support the causes that they care about the most. The Barclays Wealth Chairman’s Awards recognise those individuals or groups who have made a real and lasting impact on their local community and colleagues, in most cases with Barclays Wealth support.
As an award winner, the Barclays Wealth Community Team was awarded £500 to donate to a charity of its choice. The Team decided to pledge their winnings to Mont A l’Abbe School, a cause close to each of their hearts. In November 2010 the school scooped £21,571 in the Barclays Wealth Community Awards, which is being used to create a new sensory room at the school, which caters for the island’s children who have disabilities.
Sharon Eddie, head teacher at Mont A l’Abbe, said, ‘One of the targets in our school development plan this year is to establish a student council at our secondary site. The student council members will be involved with making decisions about issues that will benefit everyone in their learning community such as teamwork, friendship and social behaviour. We would also like to give the students a budget and they will be asked to consider and agree how best to use it. We hope that the student council initiative will encourage a sense of responsibility, empathy and problem solving, as well as communication and negotiation skills. We are very grateful to Barclays Wealth for giving this initiative a great boost with a donation of £500.’
