Leaders from business, sport, politics and the military are taking part in a Directors Convention to analyse and discuss how Jersey’s private sector has to develop its skills to play a vital part in the future prosperity of the Island.
The one day conference is designed to help motivate directors in Jersey attain higher levels of performance in leadership and management skills. Co- hosted by the Director General of the Institute of Directors, Miles Templeman, the Convention includes contributions from the former Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Mike Jackson, who commanded British forces in Kosovo and entrepreneur champion Julie Meyer, CEO of Ariadne Capital, an online BBC ‘Dragon’ who has earned a place in the Wall Street Journal’s Top Thirty most influential women in Europe.
Other speakers secured for the event from the UK are corporate governance specialist Richard Smerdon, the author of ’A Practical Guide to Corporate Governance’; social anthropologist Nicole Svatek, formerly of Virgin Atlantic, and Stikeman and Elliott International Tax Principal, Richard Hay, an offshore finance specialist.
Adding the local context to the debate will be Treasury Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, BT Global challenge team leader Will Carnegie, the Managing Director of the Jersey Waterfront Board, Stephen Izatt, Paul Masterson, Chief Executive of Durrell Wildlife and Stephen Platt, a Director of the Jersey International Business School and co-chair on the day.
Participants in the convention will deliver their presentation and then face questions on the content from co-host Miles Templeman. There will also be a panel discussion focusing on the hopes and fears of entrepreneurs. Stephen Platt, JIBS Director, commented:
‘The performance of the private sector will be critical for the future prosperity of our Island but business leaders and other directors are faced with a bewildering array of challenges in 2010 and beyond. Many are running firms in an increasingly competitive offshore marketplace, they face tougher standards of corporate governance, rising expectations of director’s duties, a shortage of skills in a finite labour market, and for those in the financial services industry, an industry that operates in hostile market conditions where offshore jurisdictions remain under the spotlight. The Directors of JIBS decided to stage this Convention to help analyse issues of leadership and management in the context of the environment in which Jersey directors are working.’
