In the spirit of South Africa’s National Women’s Day, two impactful events were held to honour and empower women in the finance industry. These events, hosted in Johannesburg and Cape Town, provided platforms for female leaders to share their journeys and discuss the future of women in leadership roles.

Thursday 15 August Perspectives: Women in Leadership, Johannesburg

The first event, titled ‘Perspectives: Women in Leadership’, took place on Thursday 15 August in Johannesburg. This women-only gathering, led by Dr. Rufaro Nyakatawa, brought together leading professionals from the global finance industry. The event focussed on the personal stories of these women, who shared their unique perspectives and experiences. Attendees were inspired by keynote speeches from Peggy-Sue Khumalo, Head of Stakeholder Engagement at Investec and Miss South Africa 1996, and Brenda Kali, Chairperson and Founder of Conscious Companies. These leaders discussed the challenges they’ve faced and the strategies they’ve employed to break barriers and make a lasting impact in their fields.

On Thursday 22 August, the celebration continued in Cape Town with the event, ‘Responsible Leadership: The Future of Women on Boards’, co-hosted by Jersey Finance in collaboration with 100 Women in Finance. This exclusive event and education session for aspiring women leaders began with an art walkabout led by art specialist Sarah Sinisi, showcasing top contemporary African and South African masters. The evening set the stage for a rich cultural and professional exchange.

Following the walkabout, Tania Pringle, Wealth Manager at Cartesian Wealth & Advisory (Pty) Ltd., delivered the opening address. The highlight of the evening was an in-depth fireside chat moderated by Dr. Rufaro Nyakatawa with Sindi Mabaso-Koyana, Chairperson of the African Women Chartered Accountants Investment Holding Company (AWCA Investment Holdings).

Sindi shared invaluable insights from her career journey to senior leadership, discussing the impact women are making on Africa’s development, sustainability issues in South Africa, and more. The event also provided ample opportunities for networking, allowing participants to connect with like-minded professionals and build valuable relationships.
