The Jersey Society for Chartered and Certified Accountants (JSCCA) has announced a new Executive Committee to support its members and represent the accountancy profession in Jersey.
Following its recent Annual General Meeting James de Veulle (pictured) has been appointed President with Wendy Martin supporting him as Vice-President, both expecting to hold their posts for the next two years.
James de Veulle (pictured), is an assurance Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Jersey and leads their Banking industry sector across the Channel Islands. He qualified with PwC in London, where he worked for 9 years before returning to the island in 2007. He has a broad range of international experience across banking, capital markets, alternative asset management and fiduciary industry sectors and has worked on assignments across Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. James is a Fellow Chartered Accountant with 20 years of experience and has practised in Jersey for the last 10 years. He has previously also served on the committee of the Jersey Funds Association.
Wendy Martin (also pictured), who will continue in the role of Vice-President. Head of Tax at EY Channel Islands, she has over 15 years of experience advising clients on a wide range of tax matters including international tax structuring in the private equity sector. Wendy was previously Head of Tax Policy within Jersey Government, where she negotiated several intergovernmental agreements on behalf of Jersey with the US and the UK.
A further change comes with Catherine Watson taking on the role of Chair of the Training and CPD Sub-Committee vacated by James. Catherine is currently the Chief Internal Auditor of the States of Jersey and previously worked for a large global bank and in practice with Deloitte in Jersey and New Zealand. She is a Chartered Accountant and in qualifying she also earned the JSSCA outstanding academic achievement award. Her focus will be on supporting one of the JSCCA’s key objectives, ensuring that both qualified accountants and trainees receive relevant CPD that supports their qualifications.
Remaining members continue in their current roles, chairing sub-committees where indicated, are Bob Henkhuzens (Treasurer), Steven Hunt (Accounting Regulation), Matt Ryan (Technical), Andrew Bougourd (Tax), Aynslie Le Brun, Bill Glancy and Tim Brown. Caroline Harrington continues in her role as Secretary.
The Committee is focused on continuing to achieve the JSCCA’s stated aims:
- To encourage co-operation between members, and to stimulate the interest and participation of members in matters concerning the accounting profession
- To provide a forum for discussion on matters of mutual interest and to provide a medium for expression of professional opinion on matters of public interest
- To communicate with the Jersey authorities and other professional bodies and promote high standards of professional conduct.
James de Veulle said:
“I am very much looking forward to the challenges that come with the role of President of the JSCCA and working with my colleagues on the Executive Committee to address these. My objectives will include improving the interaction with our members through the launch of a new website, facilitating more regular updates on topical issues, and engaging better with students so that they are well-informed as to what a career in accountancy may offer them.
Regular dialogue with members and obtaining feedback from students will be important in achieving these objectives. We also aim to reach deeper into the accounting community and grow our membership amongst practitioners in smaller businesses and charities who we believe could greatly benefit from membership, for instance from our training programme which is accessible to all JSCCA members.”
To help the Committee assess the support needs of current and potential new members, any accountants who would like to provide feedback (whether currently members of the JSCCA or not) are invited to provide comments and/or register their interest in future surveys with the Secretary by emailing email@example.com.
