Carey Olsen’s “consistently excellent service levels and visibility on fees” have further boosted the law firm’s top tier position in the Legal 500, a leading source of information on the legal profession.

The firm is ranked in the top tier for 12 practice areas across the Channel Islands and in tier two for three, having moved up to tier one in ‘corporate and commercial’ and ‘commercial property’ in Jersey and ‘dispute resolution’ in Guernsey.

Legal 500 positioned the firm in tier one for commercial and banking in Guernsey and for corporate and commercial work in Jersey and highlighted the roles the team played in advising State Street on the Channel Islands aspects of its high profile acquisition of Mourant International Finance Administration and in advising Close Brothers Group on the sale of its trust and fund administration business to Kleinwort Benson.

The firm also achieved a top tier position in Jersey and Guernsey for dispute resolution with the practice being recognised for its “pragmatic advice and speedy responses”.

The team’s role in advising Kleinwort Benson on the setting aside of a trust and in defending “Mr Bhojwani in a headline money laundering prosecution” were especially noted.

Carey Olsen’s fiduciary law group held its tier one position in both islands in the private client, trusts and tax category with clients reporting an appreciation of the team’s “…pragmatic approach to issues”.

Commercial property in both islands achieved tier one positions and was noted for its understanding of “the commerciality of deals”. Its role on the Sandpiper deal with Waitrose was cited.

The firm maintained its long-standing tier one position in Guernsey and was placed in tier two in Jersey in the investment funds category with partners across the firm receiving excellent personal recommendations.

For employment services, Carey Olsen was ranked in tier one in Jersey and tier two in Guernsey with particular mention being made of senior associate and employment specialist Huw Thomas who joined the firm last year.

Legal 500’s insurance category is only applied to Guernsey and the firm held its long-standing tier one position.

The directory also reported the firm’s lateral hire of “exceptionally strong” corporate partner Christopher Anderson who is noted for his experience in insurance and reinsurance as a major coup. Other new hires that were recognised in the rankings were Jersey partner James Mulholland, whose experience covers international funds and corporate work with particular emphasis on private equity.

Carey Olsen chairman John Kelleher said: “We are grateful to our clients who participated in this research and took the time to recognise our work and be so complimentary. “All our people contribute to the high levels of service and expertise across the Channel Islands and it is particularly pleasing that this has been highlighted by Legal 500. “The fact that Carey Olsen has been ranked in tier one and two in 15 practice areas across the Channel Islands reflects our strength and depth and demonstrates that our expertise is consistently high across the board.”
