Elian has pledged £90,000 over the next two years to the Donna Annand Melanoma Charity (DAMC), as part of a planned long term commitment to support the Charity in its goals to highlight the dangers of malignant melanoma. The funding will be used to help run Mole Clinics and continue the Charity’s awareness campaigns plus help more local doctors receive specialist training to detect the disease.
The Charity was formed in 2011 to highlight the dangers of malignant melanoma and to help create wider understanding about the disease with its key message being Prevention, Protection and Early Detection. Since its launch, the Charity has held seven free Mole Clinics to allow islanders to have their moles checked and provide the finance for six local doctors to receive specialist training enabling them to enhance and develop their skills relating to melanoma.
Elian's funding will ensure the DAMC is able to meet its ambition to support the training of a wider number of local doctors and nurses as well as to broaden the Charity’s awareness campaign across all secondary schools in the island. Future Mole Clinics will also be hosted on a more regular basis in Elian’s offices offering a professional and private environment.
Elian's Chief Operating Officer Simon Willing said, ‘The Donna Annand Melanoma Charity provides a vital service to islanders and we are incredibly impressed by what the Charity has achieved in a short space of time. Recent research clearly identifies skin cancer as a major issue facing the island and our medical services. Elian's support will allow the Charity to plan for the future; to bring expert medical training to the island and ensure that islanders understand how they can protect themselves and their families. On top of our funding, we are encouraging all of our employees to support the Charity by giving up their time to assist their busy programme of events. We will be doing everything we can to support the Charity's objectives.’
DAMC Chairman Louisa McInnes, who is also an Elian employee, added, ‘The partnership with Elian has the potential to transform the Charity’s work in raising awareness of melanoma and training more local doctors in the specialist skills needed to detect the disease early on – this is crucial. The DAMC has grown significantly since launching four years ago, and the extra funding provided by Elian will be instrumental in helping the Committee to widen its activities and awareness.’

The DAMC and Elian wish to launch a similar initiative in Guernsey in the future, and this will be explored with the help of staff in Elian's Guernsey office.
