The recent Channel Islands regional final of the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Team Maths Challenge saw Elizabeth College from Guernsey retain their crown after several testing rounds of mathematical problem solving requiring a combination of mental, communication and team working skills.
In winning they retain the BWCI Maths Challenge Trophy they won last year in Guernsey. Jersey's Victoria College A finished as runners up with Guernsey Grammar taking third place*
The annual event, which alternates between Guernsey and Jersey, took place at the Town Hall in St Helier and saw 12 teams of four from both Islands battle it out over numerous rounds. Pupils are
drawn from years 8 and 9 (12-14 years old).
The winning team will now represent the Channel Islands in the national final in London in June where they will pit themselves against the top teams from across the British Isles.
On hand to present the prizes was Lindsay Wright from BWCI's Jersey office who commented: “BWCI are delighted to continue sponsorship of this worthwhile event, as we believe it's important to support and encourage young mathematicians in this way. This challenge though isn't just about solving mathematical problems, it requires practical problem solving skills, teamwork and communication, all of which are skills that are extremely useful in life beyond the classroom”.
The event was organised by the UK Mathematics Trust and local co-coordinators, the venue kindly provided by the Parish of St Helier, with sponsorship provided by BWCI.
* Also taking part were team from: Jersey College for Girls, Ladies College Guernsey, Les Quennevais, Beaulieu, Haute Vallee, St Sampsons, Les Beaucamps
