This is the ninth year that RBC Wealth Management has sponsored Hautlieu students to achieve the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment (CISI) ‘Introduction to Investment’ qualification as part of their A-Levels. 62 students in total have now spent a two-week period at the company to immerse themselves in the day-to-day activities undertaken by the Offshore Securities Services Department (OSS), Middle Office and Investments teams. Jan Daniells, Head of Careers at Hautlieu School, said: ‘This annual placement is a unique opportunity for a select group of our students to see the theory they learn in the classroom put into practice, by working alongside an experienced group of finance professionals. The students have benefited greatly from a deeper insight into the practical application of technical concepts, and I hope this relationship with RBC will continue to flourish.’
For some students the connection to RBC Wealth Management does not end with a two-week placement. Since the beginning of the relationship with Hautlieu, 12 students have been employed by the Offshore Securities Services Department, and, of these, seven still work for the company.
Pritvy Beejmohun, who completed the placement, said: ‘I was delighted to get a spot on the placement, and everyone I met during the two weeks was so friendly and helpful. It has been really interesting to learn about the variety of work that goes on at an organisation like RBC, and I look forward to building on this experience as I finish my studies and take the first steps in my professional career.’
According to Helen Romeril, Manager, Offshore Securities Services, RBC Wealth Management, this placement programme is now embedded within the talent development process: ‘The competition for jobs on the Island is fierce and, now more than ever, relevant experience is a crucial differentiator for students applying for graduate roles in finance. It has been enlightening and rewarding for us to see these bright students challenge themselves in a quest to achieve their full potential. Following a comprehensive application and interview process, the successful candidates completed the placement between Monday 17th February and Friday 28th February 2014.
