The future of the Channel Islands’ Cricket League has been secured by a two year sponsorship agreement with Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited.

The league, which will be known as the Investec Channel Islands’ League, is run jointly by the Guernsey and Jersey Cricket Boards and sees each island’s top five teams from the 2010 season play in a two month competition during July and August.

‘The Investec Channel Islands’ League is an opportunity for the best cricketers in Jersey and Guernsey to play against each other. Both islands have a thriving cricket scene but the Jersey and Guernsey Cricket Boards wanted to maximise being so close to each other by providing the top teams in each island the opportunity to compete against each other,’ said Guernsey Cricket Board chief executive officer Mark Latter.

The 10 teams have been divided into two pools. Guernsey’s GCB Emerging Players and Argyll Investments will play in Pool A with Rathbones Old Victorians, Farmers-Caesareans and St Ouen. Pool B is made up Odey Rovers, Cobo Tigers and PKF Wanderers from Guernsey and Aztec Springfield and Infrasoftech Walkovers SCF from Jersey.

The teams will play a round robin format for four weeks before being split for the semi-finals. The top two teams will play in the cup semi-final, third and fourth places will compete in the plate semi final and the bottom two will play to avoid the wooden spoon.

‘It’s going to be an excellent couple of months of cricket and will see some of the local cricketing stars battle it out for the trophy. It’s impossible to predict what the results will be and we’re looking forward to some high quality batting and bowling. We’re extremely grateful to Investec for its financial support – it simply wouldn’t be possible to do this without them,’ said Chris Minty, chief executive officer of Jersey Cricket Board.

The cup final will take place in Jersey on 27th August with the plate final taking place in Guernsey on the same day.

‘Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited has offices in Guernsey and Jersey and as part of our investment in the community we were keen to find a sporting event that had a presence in both islands. The Investec Channel Islands’ League brings together both islands and we’re delighted to be involved,’ said Stephen Henry, managing director of Investec Bank (Channel Islands) Limited. -ends-
