Davidson, Head of Funds at Fairway Group and this year’s IoD Young Director of the Year, is launching Jersey’s first Lean In circle to support women in business.
The initiative was founded after the success of Sheryl Sandberg’s book ‘Lean in: Women, Work and the Will to Lead’, a bestseller which has sold more than one million copies and, since its launch in 2013, has seen 33,000 lean in circles set up in over 150 countries. The circles concept was created to provide women with a forum to support each other in fulfilling their ambitions.
Regular meetings are held to encourage members to take on new challenges and opportunities and to step outside their comfort zones.
Pippa’s decision to form the local circle was born out of inspiration from the book and from networking with other women, who not only wanted to give back to their peers but also felt a forum to share ideas and experiences would help women achieve goals and meet their career ambitions.
“Being named ‘Young Director of the Year’ by the IoD made me reflect on my career and how it has been shaped by mentoring and leadership training. I also knew there was an appetite from other female business leaders to offer guidance to women in the workplace and came across Lean In and the amazing initiative and resource the foundation provides.”
A small group of women have already met to discuss the direction of the Jersey circle.
“We hope to provide a forum for building confidence and self-belief and to educate and inspire the younger generation to make braver, bolder decisions and to add value to working women in Jersey, including mums returning to work.”
Pippa says that there has been a phenomenal response to the launch event and can envisage many groups of circles being set up on the island to exchange ideas, network and host events together.
“Above all it is about sharing experiences and support, having a confidential place to vent and work through challenges in order to allow women to be more courageous in 'putting their hand up' as Sheryl says and reaching our personal goals.”
She also hopes men will be inspired to join as issues such as equality and diversity in senior leadership roles will be important areas of discussion.
launch event, which has been kindly sponsored by Fairway Group, will consist of guest speakers, who will talk about their own career journeys and the challenges and lessons they learnt along the way.
event will take place on Wednesday 19th July, 6-8pm at CCA Galleries International.
