Peter Jackson, a solicitor at Hawksford Law, part of the Hawksford Group, has arrived back in Jersey following his 1,280mile charity cycle ride to the company’s Zurich office (and back).

Mr Jackson, 58, set off from Jersey on 30th September, and has since raised more than £3,500 for the charity, Cancer Research. After reaching the company’s Zurich office, taking in the view, and spending three hours resting, he turned his bicycle around and headed straight back to Jersey, completing the journey in 14 days.

Along the way, Mr Jackson sent entertaining daily updates to his colleagues, which soon started to highlight the potentially serious problem Mr Jackson was having in finding restaurants in which to eat. Because the fearless cyclist was covering around 100 miles per day, each evening he would arrive into his target village or town after all restaurants and supermarkets had closed – he completed his cycle almost exclusively on takeaway pizza, bread and jam (and on occasion whatever he could buy from vending machines)! Mr Jackson’s final update read: ‘This is a victory for what can be done on pizza, bread and jam, none of which will pass my lips for the next three months. Off with the lycra, the suit wins in the end.’

Mr Jackson organised the cycle ride as he recently lost both his father, Steve Jackson, and his secretary of many years, Wendy Tuckwood, to cancer within a few months of one another. He said the going has been tough but he has really enjoyed most of the ride so far: ‘I was exhausted but the adrenalin kept me going. The journey was possibly the 14 hardest yet mostly enjoyable days I can remember. I’m delighted that I have managed to raise over £3,500 so far. It was also great to know that my colleagues were supporting me, manning two exercise bikes in our St Helier office reception, raising further money for my charity to add to Hawksford’s generous donation,’ concluded Mr Jackson.

‘We are all very proud of Peter,’ said Peter Murley, chief executive, Hawksford. ‘He has achieved an amazing feat and has overcome many challenges, including a severe lack of suitable food! It is great to have him back in the office where the team presented him with a pizza – which he said he won’t eat, but may sit on as it looked quite squashy and more inviting than a bicycle saddle.’
