Jersey Finance and trust company, Hawksford, are to jointly sponsor the forthcoming STEP Arabia Conference in Dubai later this month.

The conference, which is in its fourth year, is rapidly growing and will host more than 80 delegates over the one-day event according to Laurence Black, Chairman of STEP Arabia. Opening proceedings at the event will be STEP worldwide president, Geoffrey Shindler, consultant and founder of Swiss firm L-S&S GmbH, part of the Hawksford Group.

The first Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Arabia Branch’s conference was held in 2005, with the aim to train delegates in key skills critical in international estate planning, with topics relating to the Gulf Region’s estate planning and the macro issues facing STEP professionals worldwide.

‘We are delighted to be co-sponsor of this prestigious event,’ said Peter Murley, chief executive, Hawksford Group. ‘It is a fantastic opportunity for Hawksford and Jersey Finance to fly the Jersey flag and to promote our jurisdiction as a key player in the global financial services market. ’

Over the course of the conference, Tim Cartwright from Hawksford and Naomi Rive from Appleby, as a Jersey Finance representative, will be delivering speeches to the audience of lawyers, accountants, private client professionals, trustee and corporate services providers and bankers.

Sean Costello, chief representative officer for GCC & India for Jersey Finance, who is based in Abu Dhabi added:

‘STEP Arabia brings together senior trust and estate practitioners and we are delighted that Jersey is represented by Mr Cartwright and Ms Rive. They both have vast experience and knowledge of Jersey’s wealth management offering, including high value and complex trusts, companies, limited partnerships and foundations for international families. This is an opportunity for delegates to build a relationship with Jersey by gaining an understanding of our world-class international wealth management industry for the future benefit of Jersey and the Gulf Region.’

Mr Cartwright’s talk will focus on nominee agreements. His presentation aims to be a light hearted review of this area, which is sometimes overlooked in the management of family wealth. It will highlight some of the pitfalls that can arise, particularly after the death of the client. Mr Cartwright is part of the executive team that heads up Hawksford Advisory and Hawksford Wills & Probate. He has spearheaded the development of new business and relationships within the Family Office and Employee Solutions area in the Gulf Region, which culminated in the opening of Hawksford’s Dubai branch office last year.

‘Hawksford’s Dubai office opened last March as part of the business’s global expansion and we want to continue to grow our presence in the region. This plan has been supported by the appointment of Lynda O’Mahoney as business development manager. The STEP Arabia Branch Conference also comes at a time when there are many great business opportunities for Jersey to work with the in the Gulf Region t, which we are really excited about,’ said Mr Cartwright.

Naomi Rive, private client partner and local practice group head at Appleby in Jersey, will talk about Jersey law foundations and the many characteristics that make them attractive to high net worth individuals concerned with asset protection. Her presentation will demonstrate that foundations successfully combine certainty with flexibility to meet the asset protection needs of the most complex multi-generational and geographically diverse families.

Advocate Rive’s presentation will offer practical cases studies to demonstrate how Jersey’s experienced legal and fiduciary professionals are taking advantage of the Island’s highly regarded judicial and regulatory system to establish the use of private foundations as robust wealth management structures. For all of these reasons, Jersey law foundations are likely to be central to wealth structuring for Arabian families, and this presentation will provide their advisors with an applied understanding of the key features and benefits to their clients.

The event, which is sponsored by Jersey Finance and co-sponsored by Hawksford, will take place at The Address Dubai Mall, Dubai on 27 March 2012.
