A team from Jersey Finance is visiting secondary schools as part of an initiative aimed at making finance easier to understand and more accessible, while also helping to explain the career options available to pupils in the Island.
In an introductory session, representatives from Jersey Finance present information on the impact of the credit crunch on global markets and how that has a practical effect on the local economy.
Alongside, Jersey Finance has developed an interactive game which provides an introduction to the Finance Industry and students are also invited to take part in informal psychometric testing to help them develop their skills and to see what type of career paths and roles they would enjoy. Pupils are given first hand advice on preparing a CV and interview techniques when applying for jobs.
Described as ‘fun and educational sessions focused on the finance industry in Jersey and beyond’, the Finance Industry School Roadshows are taking place at six secondary schools between now and September. Pupils from Year 10 and above are participating.
Dara Lutes, Head of Marketing at Jersey Finance, said:
‘The intention is to engage young people at school with the Finance Industry, if possible in a lively and entertaining way, in order to try and break down some of the natural barriers that exist to understanding the Industry in Jersey. We are delighted to have worked in partnership with Careers Jersey and the secondary schools on this initiative and the feedback from our first few school visits is already very encouraging.’
The schools initiative is part of a wider programme of activity which is being considered to help young people in the Island and their parents understand more about the finance industry, the skills required and the wide range of careers that can be undertaken within the Industry.
