Visitors to Durrell will be able to watch and learn about orangutans from a refurbished Longhouse at the Trust’s headquarters from next month, thanks to Jersey Trust Company. Up to 30 Jersey Trust Company employees will be working together over the weekend of the 15th and 16th August to clean and renovate the Longhouse which provides the public with the best view of the orangutans as they play outside. The group will be cleaning the whole of the Longhouse, staining it and then putting their DIY skills to the test to fix up the areas in need of attention. Kirsten Morel, Relationship Manager at Durrell explains why the project is such a big help. ‘When JTC approached us about opportunities for volunteering, I immediately thought of the Longhouse at the orangutan enclosure. It is in desperate need of a refresh and is a very important building for us as it conveys our key messages associated with the plight of orangutans in the wild. It is one of the best viewing positions from which to see our orangutans and it is important that the area is welcoming to members of the public so that they can enjoy spending time there watching the animals as well as watching our educational videos.’ Nigel Le Quesne, Group Managing Director of Jersey Trust Company, is delighted that the company is working alongside Durrell for this community project. ‘The orangutan Longhouse is in need of some attention and repair and I am pleased that our employees have responded so positively to the challenge,’ he said. ‘A large number of our staff will work on the project at Durrell and we are delighted that the general public will benefit from everyone’s hard work for many years to come.’
