The Jersey charity Le Tournoi has today announced the launch of their Sailing Challenge 2010, with the excellent news that the full Clipper fleet has been secured for the event. Working in partnership with some of the most prestigious yachting entities in the UK – Clipper Ventures, Britannia Corporate Events and Hanover House UK – the sailing challenge will take place from 26th September to 3rd October 2010.

“Le Tournoi’s aim is to continually evolve innovative, challenging and fun events which are accessible to all and the Sailing Challenge is no exception,” explains Charity Chairman Andy Le Seelleur. “Our partnership with the organising companies will guarantee the very best yachts, race organisation and management, ensuring the Le Tournoi Sailing Challenge is taken to a whole new level for all participants in 2010.”

The challenge is open to individuals and corporates willing to participate, regardless of their sailing skills and abilities. It provides the perfect solution for corporates who wish to use the thrilling outdoor environment as a chance to put their team work skills to the test, as was witnessed by participating companies in the highly successful 2006 and 2008 events.

All yachts will be supplied with highly skilled and experienced skippers and first mates, although first mates can be provided by the participating crew, on the condition they are suitably qualified and experienced for such a race. The ten-strong fleet of 68-foot Clipper yachts will have just undergone an extensive maintenance and re-fit period following the completion of the current round-the-world Clipper Challenge, which set off in September 2009 and returns in July 2010. These boats are the thoroughbreds of the yachting world, tried and tested in the most treacherous oceans of the world and taken to the absolute limits by the crews who dared to take on the Challenge.

A second fleet of Beneteau 40.7’s will complete the Challenge fleet, providing participants with a choice of vessel. Entrants will have the chance of a lifetime to sail around Portsmouth, Poole, Guernsey, the Breton port of St Quay Pontrieux and Jersey, before heading back to the finish line in Portsmouth. Each race leg is designed to ensure a wide variety of sailing conditions are experienced over the course of the week.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, an active supporter of Le Tournoi and Chairman of Clipper Ventures Plc further explains, “the underlying principles of Clipper are echoed in the Le Tournoi ethos where ordinary people are encouraged to do extraordinary things by leaving their comfort zones and learning what the can achieve as part of a highly effective and motivated team”.

Sir Robin reinforces the immense benefits for businesses taking part in the challenge. “The winning boat is always crewed by the team that works best together. In the same way as in business, successful corporations are those in which the team works together seamlessly with a clear focus”.

A proportion of the funds raised from the Sailing Challenge 2010 will be donated to Le Tournoi’s beneficiaries, including maritime charitable organisations such as the RNLI and The Spirit of Variety, which provides sailing opportunities to Jersey’s disabled. “A core principle of Le Tournoi is to actively involve our charities and areas of the local community who would not usually have the chance to participate in these events and we will be working hard to ensure their involvement wherever possible, alongside the corporates taking part. This brings enormous benefit to everyone and differentiates us from most other sailing events” added Andy Le Seelleur. The Le Tournoi Sailing Challenge 2010 is continually evolving with the finer details being finalised on a weekly basis. Further event details and schedules will be released as finalised, but for up to date information and registration details, enquirers should visit the comprehensive Le Tournoi website – www.letournoi.org.

Notes to Editors
Le Tournoi celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2010. The charity raises funds primarily through sporting events including the well-known Le Tournoi Soccer Challenge and the newer Sailing, Golf and Cricket activities and challenges.

Le Tournoi ensures quality and excellence in everything the charity undertakes and, at all times, looks to match-make corporate good will with community need, to the benefit of all those taking part. Making a big impact with small donations, Le Tournoi supports the second tier beneficiaries who often aren’t the usual suspects for charitable support. These have included the Jersey Sports Association for the Disabled (JSAD), Jersey Society for Deaf Children and Young Adults (JSDCYA), Education for the Children Foundation and Multiple Sclerosis Jersey. Each challenge also identifies related beneficiaries for the theme of the event e.g. RNLI will benefit from sailing.

Le Tournoi provides incredible opportunities for its beneficiaries to raise their profile, be given a voice, or be invited to participate. The benefits of such participation are immense. Throughout 2010, Le Tournoi will be bringing a host of activities and fund-raising initiatives to the Jersey events calendar which will benefit many and also provide the perfect backdrop to celebrate the first 10 years of this passionate, dedicated charity.
