THREE thousand pounds has been raised for Jersey charity Les Amis in an art auction organised to celebrate the office launch of ZEDRA at 50 La Colomberie.
Members of Les Amis created 11 works of art that were auctioned on Thursday 13 July. The pieces were all locally inspired and used an array of mediums from oils to collage. The two pieces that received the highest bids were ‘Jersey Cow’ by Eddie and ‘Mont Orgueil Castle’ by Justin. The piece to receive the highest quantity of bids was ‘Starry Nights’ by Neville.
The launch event was attended by over 100 associates and partners of ZEDRA, Les Amis members and staff and the ZEDRA senior management team. Speeches were made by Ashley Cox, Managing Director, ZEDRA Jersey, and Shaun Findlay, Managing Director, Les Amis.
The event also included the reveal of an inspiring piece of art commissioned by ZEDRA and produced by Les Amis residents. The acrylic painting, that measures almost five feet long, is titled ‘Hope Dawn of a New Day’ and has pride of place in ZEDRA’s new reception. The piece reflects the context of the Wizard of Oz and how the film symbolised the political climate of Europe at the time of its release in 1939. During this time, the tragedy and injustice of the T4 Operation was unfolding. Within this painting, the yellow brick road symbolises the path to social change, whilst the rainbow represents the dawn of a new day. The poppies act as a poignant symbol of remembrance for the 275,000 disabled people who were estimated to have lost their lives as a result of Operation T4.
The artwork was painted by members of Les Amis who all live with a disability. Fingerprint painting has been used to highlight the individuality of each person and emphasise that ‘dis-ability’ does not mean ‘in-ability’.
All the artwork for the auction was produced at the new Les Amis Day Centre. ZEDRA has committed to supporting the Day Service financially as well as encouraging their own team to teach classes and assist in activities.
Ashley Cox, Managing Director, ZEDRA Jersey, says: ‘The Les Amis art auction was a fantastic way to celebrate the launch of our new offices in Jersey. So much work went into the pieces and Les Amis should be very proud. The piece we commissioned for our new reception touched the hearts of everyone who attended and it will be a lasting reminder. I am very grateful to all our partners and associates who joined us for the launch. Their support has enabled us to expand and make our mark in Jersey since inception. I now look forward to the next chapter in our business lifecycle that will see further diversity and expansion of our team and services.’
Shaun Findlay, Managing Director, Les Amis, says: ‘I cannot express the immense feeling of pride I have with respect to the hard work and outcomes achieved by the residents and staff who supported them to produce such amazing pieces of art. It goes without saying how important it was for Les Amis to ensure we contributed to an excellent launch evening as without the support of ZEDRA our work would be so much harder. The evening went really well and we are very happy with the £3000 raised to assist us in developing our new nursing and complex needs unit. Thank you ZEDRA!’
