In 2023, Lily Butel participated in our Life in Finance scheme, which offers local sixth-form and college students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on work experience in financial services or related professional sectors.

During her two-week summer placement at Alex Picot Trust, Lily undertook a rotational role, exploring different parts of the business and discovering which areas interested her the most.

Her experience through the scheme proved invaluable, leading her to secure a full-time position at Alex Picot Trust as a trainee accountant. The program helped Lily identify her career path after school, so we caught up with her to ask a few questions!

How did you first hear about the Life in Finance scheme, and what made you want to apply?

“I first heard about the Life in Finance scheme through a presentation at school. I decided to attend as I was unsure what I wanted to do once I had finished school. I felt university wasn’t for me and wanted to see if a career in finance was.”

What was it like working at Alex Picot over the summer? Can you describe a typical day or a memorable experience you had?

“During my summer placement at Alex Picot Trust, I got to experience different areas of the business, each day I was able to shadow members of the team and have hands-on practical experience in a number of departments.”

What did you enjoy most about your work experience at Alex Picot, and how did it shape your view of a career in finance?

“During my work experience placement, I enjoyed the rotational element, where I got to experience different departments such as HR, accounting, marketing and compliance. I found I was most suited to and enjoyed accounting the most, I expressed my interest and enjoyment in this area which resulted in Alex Picot Trust offering me a trainee accountancy position once I had finished my A-levels.”

How did you feel when Alex Picot was offered you a full-time role?

“I was relieved and excited as it meant that I could just focus on my A-levels rather than worry about what I was going to do after I finished school. I had also gained insight into the people, work, culture and environment at Alex Picot Trust prior to accepting the role, which is not usually the case before you join a new company!”

What advice would you give to other students considering applying to the Life in Finance scheme?

“Look for placements with rotational work as it gives you a feel for different careers in finance, rather than on one specific area. The finance sector has many different roles available and the Life in Finance scheme is a great way to gain insight into these roles.”
