The Lions Club of Jersey has now launched the Island’s 40th Swimarathon.
The annual fund-raising event will take place from 9th March to 13th March 2011 and organisers are looking forward to an even bigger welcome for the Swimarathon than ever this year.
Lions Club President Carl Howarth said: “The forthcoming Swimarathon is a very important event for the Lions Club of Jersey for it is the 40th consecutive event which since, the first was held in 1972, has raised almost £3 million.
‘It is also the fifth and last time that His Excellency, the Lieutenant Governor, Lieutenant General Andrew Ridgway, and Mrs Ridgway will participate and they, with their team, the Royal Seals, will have raised as much as an entire Swimarathon during their term of office.
‘Above all, this important anniversary is a tribute to the people of Jersey, and latterly our principal sponsors RBC Wealth Management, who have supported the Lions Club of Jersey so consistently over the years. We are extremely grateful to them all and look forward to celebrating this 40th event in greater than ever numbers,’ said Mr Howarth.
Appropriately, the number 40 has been chosen as a theme for this year’s event and the Lions Club have made the decision that a minimum of 40 charities will be supported with the cash raised by this year’s swimmers. ‘We hope that in spreading the net as wide as possible, we can use this year to benefit as many Islanders as possible. We are inviting all local charities who would like to be considered as a beneficiary of the 2011 Swimarathon to contact us,’ said Mr Howarth.
The 40th Swimarathon should also see a record number of teams taking part with the capacity for teams increased to 440 to ensure that as many swimmers as possible can take part and raise funds for the beneficiary charities.
Paul Patterson, Global Head of Trust, RBC Wealth Management said that the Swimarathon has always been a true community event which annually saw thousands of islanders swimming and raising money for Jersey charities. ‘We are proud of our association with the Swimarathon and the fact that so many of our own staff get involved each year. It is no secret that times are not easy for charities and the Lions commitment to support so many of them with this year’s event should strike a chord with every islander,’ said Mr Patterson.
The 2011 Swimarathon will take place at Les Quennevais Leisure Centre and anyone who would like more information about entering a team or would like to apply to become a beneficiary charity is asked to e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
