People were pleasantly surprised across the Channel Islands yesterday as Sure acknowledged New Zealand’s National Random Act of Kindness (RAK) day with its very own alternative day of giving.

Every year, New Zealanders celebrate National RAK Day on the 1st September. Businesses and the general community come together to spread a little cheer and to perform random acts of kindness on friends and strangers alike.

The team at Sure decided to replicate this day of kindness locally and spent the day racing around the islands to perform a number of different generous and surprising acts.

In Jersey, the day started at 8am with Sure handing out pastries to people disembarking at Liberation Station on their way to work. This was then followed by a delivery to the hospital of a basket of muffins for the doctors, nurses and midwives on the maternity ward.

The RAK team then moved on to Aqua Splash where free entry was given to 20 youngsters.

The town lunch rush was next on the list and a number of lucky customers found themselves eating for free as the RAK team descended to pick up their tabs.

After lunch, the team moved out of town to surprise a number of shoppers at Ransoms Garden Centre, paying for their afternoon teas. Anyone shopping at the Co-op Grand Marche in St Helier then had a surprise. On top of their Double Dividend, five lucky families were given £10 towards their weekly shop.

Steve Smith, Head of PR, Sure, explained the thinking behind the day.

“We wanted to raise awareness in the islands of the RAK day celebrations that are already happening around the world. The full day of activity follows a series of RAKs that Sure has been performing in Jersey and Guernsey throughout 2009. The celebrations kicked off back in February with a free pancake giveaway in store on Shrove Tuesday followed by free coffees at Bean Around the World and free bagels to celebrate Independence Day,” he said.

“Following the huge success of these projects, we wanted to acknowledge New Zealand’s celebrations and spread a little cheer this side of the world. With our seasons being opposites, Sure has earmarked January 25th 2010 for the first official RAK day in the Channel Islands and will be encouraging Jersey and Guernsey residents and businesses to come together and celebrate their own national RAK day from now on. It would be great to get support from the local community and to see people performing their own RAKs on that day.”

January 25th 2010 coincides with the most depressing day of the year (Blue Monday), which has been mathematically calculated as being the first Monday of the last week of January each year. Channel Islands RAK day will be celebrated on this Monday every year.

To launch the Channel Island’s own RAK day, Sure is offering local residents the chance to secretly nominate a friend or family member who they believe deserves to be at the receiving end of a random act of kindness on January 25th.

Nominations can be sent in to the RAK team from now until Friday 8th January 2010 by emailing Jessica Bisson at with your name and contact details together with a maximum of 50 words to explain who your nomination is and why they deserve to be RAK’d. Don’t forget to keep it a secret!
