With just one week to go before the 2010 Swimarathon, a record-breaking 448 teams are entered to take part in the big swim. Well over 3,000 Islanders from schools, businesses and associations will be swimming to raise money for Holidays for Heroes Jersey, the Jersey Special Gymnastics Club and other local projects of the Lions Club of Jersey. Lion Eric Bertrand, President of Lions Club of Jersey, said that it was a testament to the enduring popularity of the Swimarathon that each year the number of people who swim increases. ‘It’s always good news that so many people want to take part in the Swimarathon. It means that each year we are able to provide valuable assistance to our chosen charities.’ Teams from both beneficiaries will be swimming in the event. Among those taking to the water are over 200 pupils from Les Quennevais School. Les Quennevais’s 24-strong team entry is the largest from a single school this year, with Island schools representing nearly 40 per cent of those swimming over the five days. Assistant head teacher, Julie Ashley, said that the Swimarathon is an event in which the whole school could get involved. ‘Les Quennevais has a long tradition of entering the Swimarathon and the students expect and want to take part,’ she explained. ‘Year on year we also increase the amount of money we raise and hope that we will do so again in 2010.’ The Swimarathon is being sponsored for the fourth consecutive year by RBC Wealth Management and again this year the organisation has 14 teams donning their swim gear. Paul Patterson, Head of RBC Wealth Management, British Isles, will be among the swimmers. ‘The Swimarathon is an amazing event which involves and benefits the wider community in Jersey. We are delighted to take part both as sponsors and swimmers.’ There are still a few spaces available at this year’s Swimarathon which is being held at Les Quennevais Sports Centre from Wednesday 3rd to Sunday 7th March.
