The Appleby Schools programme which is sponsored by Appleby has involved 22 different primary and secondary schools on the Island, which has seen over 600 pupils taking part. The children have enjoyed taster sessions, festivals, open days, activitiy days, after school clubs and six week coaching programmes. Out of the 600 over 250 pupils have registered and trained through the Appleby Junior Academy Training Programme in the last four years.
Craig Gascoyne, JTTA Development Officer said: “We have been running the Appleby Schools Development Programme for four years now and it is going from strength to strength as more schools invest in table tennis tables, bats and balls for coaching sessions. In the first year of the Appleby Schools Programme, our intention was to focus on increasing numbers, getting students to master the basic techniques and enjoy the sport, but it is amazing what some of the children have gone on to achieve. There has been some real talent in the classes and seeing them improve so much is very rewarding.”
David Benest, Managing Partner of Appleby in Jersey added: “We are very proud to be able to support the JTTA in their goal to raise the profile of table tennis throughout schools in Jersey. It is fantastic that so many children are able to participate in the sport and benefit from the dedication of the JTTA.”
