Legal professionals in Jersey are to benefit from a newly established secondment programme that has been designed to help strengthen Jersey’s growing business links with China.

Zhaoan Li, Jersey Finance’s Head of Greater China Business Development, has helped establish the secondment exchange opportunity for Jersey legal professionals by working closely with the Shanghai office of King & Wood, one of the largest law firms in China.

Jersey Finance has also consulted with Jersey law firms to develop the initiative. Details will be finalised shortly, with the first Jersey lawyers specialising in corporate and funds work expected to head to Shanghai in July for a period of three months.*

In return, King & Wood will send a number of their lawyers to work on a secondment basis at Jersey firms by early next year.

Zhaoan Li said:

“This secondment programme has received a very positive response from both Chinese and Jersey lawyers. Interest in Jersey as an international finance centre, particularly for corporate and funds work, is growing rapidly amongst Chinese professionals whilst China remains a key market for Jersey. This programme will be really valuable for both parties in gaining a better understanding of how to work with each other. It is a really exciting development that we hope will become a long-term arrangement.”

Geoff Cook, chief executive, Jersey Finance, added:

“Jersey has made great strides in building a strong relationship with China in recent years, through regular visits to the Far East, the appointment of Zhaoan and the opening of a representative office in Hong Kong last year. Initiatives like this secondment programme really help to reinforce that relationship. Not only will it give Jersey lawyers the opportunity to gain experience in a key market, it will also enable Chinese lawyers to come and see for themselves the kind of high quality work that is done here.”

Ends.
