This November, we proudly hosted four exclusive events in Cape Town and Johannesburg, offering a platform for meaningful discussions on sustainability, private wealth, and UK taxation. Led by Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa, our Market Development Consultant – Africa, the events brought together South African and Jersey-based professionals to explore the shared opportunities and challenges in today’s financial landscape. Chris Jenkins, our Global Head of Market Development, was also in attendance.

We were delighted to be joined by Joe Pennell and Frederick Holmes, representatives from the Government of Jersey at each of these events, where they highlighted the growing appeal of Jersey as an international finance centre of choice for South African advisers and their clients.

Cape Town The Future of Sustainability in Africa

The event series began on 26 November in Cape Town, where we partnered with TMF Group (South Africa) to host a breakfast event on responsible investing.

Following welcome addresses from Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa, our Market Development Consultant – Africa, and Neil Krüll, Director at TMF Group, the theme of responsible investing was explored by keynote speaker Diane Laas, Global Portfolio Manager and Head of ESG at Melville Douglas.

Cape Town Future Focus on South Africa

In the evening, we partnered with the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Cape Town branch for a networking dinner focussing on the private client sector. After opening remarks by Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa and STEP Cape Town Chairperson Dale Irvine, the event explored the growing appeal of Jersey as an international finance centre.

The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Dale Irvine, where experts Dean Douglas, Director at IQ-EQ (Jersey), and Catherine de Maid, Partner at Burges Salmon, considered the implications of the UK’s tax changes and non-dom regime. Guests concluded the evening with a seated dinner and an engaging networking reception.

Johannesburg Future Focus on South Africa

On 28 November, the focus shifted to Johannesburg for another successful networking dinner in partnership with STEP Johannesburg branch. Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa was joined by STEP Johannesburg Chairperson Hanna Marais to host the networking dinner, which featured renowned economist Professor Adrian Saville for a keynote address titled ‘A Time to Build Brilliant – Harnessing New Markets, New Models, and New Mindsets’. His thought-provoking insights resonated with attendees and set the stage for engaging conversations over dinner.

Johannesburg UK Tax Changes: Effects on Non-Doms

The final event of the series, held on 29 November in Johannesburg, brought together private wealth professionals for a deep dive into the UK’s non-dom regime. Guests heard from Harry Joffe, STEP Council Representative for Africa & Middle East, and Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa, before an insightful panel session featuring Dean Douglas and Catherine de Maid, who provided practical insights into the implications of UK tax changes for non-domiciled individuals. This breakfast session concluded an impactful week of discussions and relationship-building.

We look forward to making more connections and hosting more events in South Africa next year. If you’re interested in being part of our network, please contact Dr Rufaro Nyakatawa or create a web account to keep up to date with our activity in Africa.
