Finance professionals from across the Island turned out in force for the announcement of a brand new training course ‘Understanding Sustainable Finance’ at an event at CCA Galleries earlier this month. The eight-module video-led training course has been tailored to respond to the needs of International Finance Centres (IFCs) like Jersey and provides an opportunity for financial professionals at all levels to upskill, gain knowledge and stay ahead of the sustainability curve.

The course has been developed by Andrew Mitchell, founder of Equilibrium Futures and a world authority on natural capital, an advisor to major banks and institutions and the founder of the Taskforce for Nature-Related Financial Disclosure (TNFD). Andrew Mitchell has recently been awarded the Founder’s Medal by the Royal Geographical Society, recognising his lifetime contribution towards protecting tropical rainforests, combatting climate change, and supporting sustainable finance. Past recipients of this prestigious award, gifted under the approval of King Charles, include Neil Armstrong and Sir David Attenborough.

Andrew Mitchell said: “If you think sustainable finance is just a compliance exercise, then we won’t win. This course will give you an understanding of why this phenomenon is growing so fast around the world, and it will help to ensure that you don’t get left behind. There are modules for Trustees on fiduciary duty, for Family Offices on engaging Next Gen beneficiaries and for Asset Managers on how to invest with impact. What’s the point of a pension fund if it pays out into a dead world? This course is not simply about how to make more money or comply with regulations. It is about inspiring the culture in your office, how to retain existing clients and attract new ones, and yes, how to make the world a better place, all through the lens of understanding sustainable finance.”

Speaking at the event, Joe Moynihan, Jersey Finance CEO said: “The high levels of skills, training, and experience within our financial and professional services workforce have contributed significantly to Jersey’s reputation as an IFC of excellence. Further, we recognise the importance of building knowledge, understanding, and upskilling our workforce across the whole Island’s ecosystem with regards to sustainable finance today to maintain these standards in the future.”

Equilibrium Futures wishes to thank Accuro who has been a champion of the initiative since its inception. Speaking at the event, Paul Douglas, Managing Director of Accuro in Jersey said: “We are proud to support this course, which takes what is an ever evolving and complex subject and makes it practical and meaningful in a way that is captivating and enjoyable. As a leading provider of trust and private office services, Accuro recognises the critical importance of sustainable finance in driving positive change. With the knowledge that can be gained in this area, we can collaborate better, have more meaningful discussions, and challenge ourselves to find innovative solutions for the future of our planet.”
