Trustees in Jersey will get the chance to hear advice from experts on how to improve decision making at a special interactive seminar this month.

Carey Olsen and Wilberforce Chambers, London, will host the conference which will take place on 13 October at Pomme D’Or Hotel. Seminars will also be held in Guernsey and London on 12 October and 14 October respectively.

The day is broken down into lecture style briefings, interactive panel sessions and a “mock tribunal”.

Carey Olsen partners Paul Buckle, Robert MacRae and Siobhan Riley and senior associate Lewis Buckley will join Michael Furness QC, deputy head of Wilberforce Chambers, leading QC Robert Ham and barrister Judith Bryant to lead the event.

‘Getting it right: the process of trustee decision making’ will be of interest to anyone involved in trust administration and practice. The speakers will be focusing on recent developments in the law affecting the trustee decision-making process.

Carey Olsen trust and litigation partner Robert MacRae said: “This topic is very much in the spotlight at the moment and while decision making is something trustees do all the time, it is particularly topical at present owing to the increasing frequency of challenges to such decisions.”

Delegates will take part in two introductory sessions considering the decision making process before the audience is split into two groups. Each group will then consider the same set of facts but with one group preparing to make and defend a decision and the other planning arguments in support of an attack upon the decision. To conclude the event the two groups will come together and present their cases before a mock tribunal. The tribunal chair Robert Ham QC will then make a ruling on the strength of the arguments that he has heard from both sides.

“This is a particularly dynamic event being led by a group of people recognised as experts in this field. They will address difficult issues for the sector at large and the delegates should gain a valuable insight into the decision-making process,” said Advocate MacRae.

The seminar is taking place on Wednesday 13 October 2010 in the Golden Apple Suite at Pomme D’Or Hotel. Registration is at 1.30pm. The seminar starts at 1.45pm and will finish at 5.00pm. The cost is £45.00 per delegate. Please contact to register or request a registration form.
