Jersey law firm Voisin have reacted to demand in enquiries from the UK regarding obtaining Jersey Probate by hosting a specialist seminar in London later this month. It has become apparent that there is often a misconception regarding the documentation required, particularly for overseas domiciled holders of Jersey assets.

The seminar will also discuss issues that arise when English Solicitors are drafting Wills in the UK for someone who has Jersey assets. A common problem occurs when solicitors are drafting a Will covering ‘all assets in the UK’ as this does not include Jersey. This has led to instances when assets in Jersey have fallen into intestacy.

Voisin’s English Solicitor Janina Porter, and Anne Hembry from the Wills and Probate Department, will be leading the seminar for the benefit of private client contacts from London and the South West. The business event, which will be held at Ruby Blue, Leicester Square, on 29th October, has been extremely well received.

Anne Hembry, Voisin, said:

‘The perceived complexity of Jersey law by those domiciled in the UK has prompted Voisin to host this seminar. From the calls I receive on a weekly basis it is very apparent that there is confusion and misconception surrounding how to obtain title to the Jersey assets of a deceased asset holder. One of the cases we dealt with this year involved the UK Will being declared invalid resulting in the Jersey assets being distributed under the rules on intestacy in Jersey rather than according to the wishes in the Will. At Voisin we aim to assist in drafting Wills to prevent these unforeseen circumstances arising.’

Anne Hembry and Janina Porter are available for pictures and interviews on this topic.
