More than 250 Age Concern Jersey members have benefited from the refurbishment of its day centre thanks to a £1,000 donation from Barclays Wealth.

The walls and ceilings at Windsor House have been painted and the staircase varnished after the charity was awarded funding in the annual Barclays Wealth Community Awards.

Age Concern Jersey chairman, Daphne Minihane, said Windsor House in St Helier had not been redecorated for more than 20 years.

‘Donations to Age Concern Jersey are now few and far between and we have no surplus funds with which to carry out redecoration or repairs to Windsor House, so the donation from Barclays Wealth as part of its annual community awards was gratefully received,’ she said.

‘The areas that have been decorated, such as the entrance hall, office, and staircase, are now much lighter, brighter and cleaner. Without the support of businesses such as Barclays Wealth organisations like ours would struggle,’ said Mrs Minihane.

Current Age Concern Jersey members are aged between 55 and 97 years and are able to access social activities, subsidised lunches, help with administrative tasks as well as hairdressing, chiropody and computer classes at Windsor House.

‘Barclays Wealth is pleased to be able to provide funding for the restoration work at Windsor House which now offers a brighter environment for Age Concern Jersey members. We believe it is important to provide for members of the community and we are happy to support the great work done by the organisation by offering day care services for the elderly,’ said Paul Savery, Managing Director, Barclays Wealth Intermediaries and International, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man.

The winners of the Barclays Wealth Community Awards, received in total, a share of £37,812 last year. The winners also include Jersey/England Parent Support, Methodist Homes for the Aged (Jersey), Jersey Alzheimer’s Association, CRY Jersey, Teenage Cancer Trust, First Tower Community Association Youth Project, Ace of Clubs, Friends of Mont a l’Abbe School and Greyhound Rescue. This year’s Barclays Wealth Community Awards will be launched in September.
