Spearpoint, the Channel Island wealth management company, has stepped in to secure the future of the annual World Bar Billiards Championship. The Championship, due to be held at the Merton Hotel from Friday 6th through to Sunday 8th November, is attended by people from across the British Isles and was under threat when Jersey Tourism pulled their sponsorship of the event for 2009.
Bar Billiards is a traditional pub game that has been played in the Channel Islands since the 1930’s. The Jersey Bar Billiards League (JBBL) has been in existence for many years and currently consists of two divisions of about six teams, each team having six players. In 1981, the JBBL devised and initiated a new tournament, the British Isles Open Competition which was attracting just over 500 competitors at its peak. In 2000 the JBBL decided to re-brand and the World Bar Billiards Championship was born.
Last year about 210 competitors travelled to Jersey to take part. To host the World Bar Billiards Championship competition and provide the many prizes that are won over the weekend, the JBBL rely on entry fees, raffles and sponsorship. In the early years, the sponsorship came from travel companies and the local breweries. Six years ago, Jersey Tourism took over the reins but earlier this year they announced they would no longer be able to support the event. Without managing to acquire new sponsorship, the tournament would have had to have finished due to lack of funds.
President of The Jersey Bar Billiards League, Graeme Le Monnier said: “On behalf of the league I am delighted that Spearpoint has become the main sponsor for the World Bar Billiards Championship, securing the future of this most prestigious event. We hope this will be the start of a mutually fruitful partnership.”
Spearpoint is an independent investment boutique focused on preserving and growing the wealth of its clients, that is committed to supporting the community in which it operates. Paul Stephens, Head of Business Development for Spearpoint said: “We are delighted to have been able to secure the future for such a popular event and wish the event organisers the best of luck in taking the competition forward. At Spearpoint, we celebrate sharper thinking and congratulate Graeme and his team on their efforts to establish a key event in Jersey’s sporting calendar.”Ends
