Tuesday 16 May 2017, 12:30 - 19:00

Location: 8 Northumberland Avenue, London, UK

Pricing: £315 for Jersey Finance Members, complimentary for London delegates

Against a backdrop of significant shifts in the global geopolitical landscape and with Brexit now a firm reality, the 2017 Jersey Finance Annual London Private Wealth Conference will explore how the international wealth management industry is responding to unprecedented market disruption, regulatory change and the rise of post-truth politics.

One year on from the Panama Papers and with the spotlight still firmly on transparency, information exchange and beneficial ownership, expert speakers at the event will examine how international finance centres (IFCs) are adapting in an increasingly complex market to meet the needs of globally mobile clients and offer some much-needed certainty. In particular, speakers will discuss how Jersey is differentiating itself as a private wealth management centre through innovation in its legislation, a commitment to philanthropy and a concerted focus on reputation.

Tim Harford

Behavioural Economist, Journalist & Broadcaster

Tim Harford

Tim is a world-renowned behavioural economist, an award-winning Financial Times columnist, and broadcaster. Described as ‘Britain’s Malcolm Gladwell,’ and by the New Statesman as ‘perhaps the best popular economics writer in the world’ he brings storytelling, humour and intelligence to an oft-maligned discipline.

With a knack for finding fascinating explanations for everyday numbers, Tim’s first two books, The Logic of Life and The Undercover Economist, have been translated into 30 languages and sold more than a million copies. His Radio 4 show More or Less looks at the truth behind dubious statistics and manipulated figures.

Whilst he’s a ‘serious’ economist with a career spanning Oxford, Shell and the World Bank, Tim’s FT columns dwell on the economics of daily life and offer tongue-in-cheek solutions to readers’ problems. His first book built on these themes and The Undercover Economist was likened to Freakonomics in its examination and explanation of the workings of everything from coffee shops to organised crime to development aid.

Tim’s other titles include: The Logic of Life which applies economic theory to the world to explain how rational (or otherwise) our decisions are; Adapt: Why Success Always Starts With Failure shows how challenges of all types and sizes can't be solved with simple ready-made solutions - we must learn to improvise and account for the necessity of failure; and Messy: How to Be Creative and Resilient in a Tidy-Minded World which considers why tidiness, organisation and predictability aren’t always the best environments to foster creativity, innovation and achievement.

A regular TED speaker, Tim also looks at why it’s so hard yet so important to learn from mistakes, how to deal with uncertainty, how forecasting works and what to do when it doesn’t, and what innovation really means and why the wrong sort of innovation can be a distraction. Taking in everything from the military to game shows, aviation to ballet, global catastrophes to finding the right socks he questions received wisdom, common sense and statistical certainty. Tim’s accessible, easy style provides entertaining, thought-provoking insights relevant to every person and organisation.

Discussion Session - In Tune with Change

In this session, panellists will discuss what a current perceived ‘geopolitical paradox’, where wealth is increasingly global on the one hand and politics is increasingly protectionist on the other, might mean for specialist wealth management centres. With the triggering of Article 50 still fresh in people’s minds, panellists will explore how international finance centres (IFCs) can play a crucial role in facilitating financial flows in an uncertain and fragmented environment and suggest how the role of IFCs is set to change in this new look landscape. In addition, one year on from the Panama Papers data leak, panellists will look at how the emphasis private clients are placing on jurisdictional reputation is shaping wealth management strategies, and how attitudes towards a seemingly relentless transparency agenda are evolving, particularly in relation to public registers of beneficial ownership and the concepts of privacy and secrecy.

Discussion Session - Striking the Right Notes

Against a backdrop of increasing complexity in terms of global wealth trends and regulation, panellists in this session will explore how current market conditions present an ideal opportunity for innovation and creativity in the private wealth sector. With particular reference to Jersey’s recent enhancements to its trust and charities legislation and the introduction of a virtual currencies framework, panellists will discuss how a commitment to innovation can positively influence a jurisdiction’s reputation and enable it to differentiate itself in a competitive market. Pointing to developments in information exchange, such as the OECD’s Common Reporting Standard, and initiatives to combat financial crime, such as the EU’s anti-money laundering directive, panellists will also assess the emphasis private wealth advisers place on stability and security and how jurisdictions can benefit from a flight to quality by adopting a pragmatic approach to regulation and innovation.
