Jersey’s growing reputation as a centre for the operations of international mining companies was showcased to an audience of thousands at one of the world’s largest mining industry events last week.

Locate Jersey led a strong delegation including legal and financial services professionals to the Mining Indaba Conference 2014, which took place between 3rd and 6th February in Cape Town, South Africa.

It was the second time Locate Jersey has had a presence at the conference, with this year’s expanded party also including representatives from Jersey Finance, Ogier, Crestbridge, Carey Olsen, Alex Picot, Hatstone and Baccatta. A number of mining companies with a Jersey presence were also in attendance at the event, including Randgold Resources, Amlib Holdings, Centamin, Lydian International and Bellzone.

Having been run for 20 years, Mining Indaba is the world’s largest mining investment conference and Africa’s largest mining event. It regularly attracts over 7,000 attendees from almost 2,000 companies and more than 100 countries and territories.

There are currently nine mining companies in Jersey with a significant management and executive presence, some having had their headquarters in the Island for over ten years, and five having relocated in the past three years alone. Mining firms in Jersey are involved in exploration, development and processing of a range of minerals including gold, manganese ore, iron ore, nickel, copper, oil, and gas, with sites ranging from Armenia, Georgia, Russia and the Middle East, to Ghana, Papua New Guinea, Australia, the USA and New Zealand.

Speaking after the conference, Wayne Gallichan, Director of Inward Investment, Locate Jersey, said:

“We are hearing from more and more mining executives who are looking for financial expertise and business support that can both protect their worldwide assets and help their businesses grow. We are finding that Jersey increasingly fits the bill as a credible jurisdiction to locate the headquarters of exploration and mining companies, which in turn is creating additional job opportunities for the local workforce.

“The mining industry is a highly competitive one, but feedback from this conference has confirmed our belief that Jersey has an excellent reputation in the sector compared to other jurisdictions. The quality of those mining professionals we spoke to was extremely high, and some of the Jersey delegation have already reported tangible business leads following on from our attendance at this conference.”
